Paul McCartney met with the world media this week to talk about his new album Kisses On The Bottom. Here are some highlights from that webstream, including his thoughts on playing with Stevie Wonder again, on returning to the songs of his youth, and on becoming one of rock’s elder statesmen.

Kisses on the Bottom, due in early February from Concord/Hear Music, is McCartney’s 15th solo album and first record since 2007. The project is helmed by Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma, and will feature Diana Krall and her band as well as a guest appearance from Eric Clapton.

HERE’S PAUL McCARTNEY …

ON THE INSPIRATION FOR ‘KISSES ON THE BOTTOM’: Tradition in Liverpool family was the singsongs. I always loved these songs. Dad was a piano player. I wanted to do them, but I never got around to it. We were writing Sgt. Pepper, The White Album and new stuff… every time I came to this album someone else would do it. I kept saying, “well I can’t do it now, it’ll look like I’m jumping on the bandwagon.” But then I realized, I’d just do it and not worry about the market.

ON HIS FAVORITE SONG FROM ‘KISSES’: I think probably “My Valentine” because it’s kind of the newest for me. I really had a lot of fun with Eric doing the solo on it. Again, he just came up with the solo. (whistles tune) I like that. Of the old songs I also love “Bye Bye Blackbird” because normally you get (begins singing) but Tommy’s idea was to slow it right down, which I was a bit dubious about at first, but I think it works. It was very similar to how The Beatles worked. Bring it in, kick it around, and record it. The fact I was working with great jazz musicians, it’s really cool to just say to the guys, ‘let’s just go from the bass,” and the guy’s an unbelievable player, so he knows exactly what to play, which really worked.

ON RECORDING WITH STEVIE WONDER: We had this song, “Only Our Hearts” which is very ‘30s-’40s genre, that I’d written on purpose to be in that style. The producer said, “What about Stevie” and I was like “Wow.” It was a bit in left field. He agreed to come along, I met him after recording all those years ago, I’ve seen him off and on, but to record with him, we hadn’t done it in a while. But he’s such a genius. That’s one of the great things about this album. Everyone is such a great musician.

ON THE INFLUENCE OF FRED ASTAIRE: Yeah, I think Fred Astaire was just this fantastic character from that era. I remember in the ’60s when we were making Sgt. Pepper, I used to ask if they could make my jackets like Fred Astaire, he had very slick sleeves, and I wanted one. Musically, his vocal style is very interesting. Everybody thought he was lazy except the songwriters. He had this voice I wanted to try to get near. It’s like a little voice. I tried that. That became a big part of the signature of this album. Some of the stylistic things came from the people of that era. Have you seen the new film The Artist? Yes, great film, that’s the era I love. An era for style, music. An era I love.

ON BECOMING ONE OF ROCK’S ELDER STATESMEN: That’s the perspective of youth, you know? We thought 30 was really old. Now I think it’s amazingly young. The guys who came out of college at 24, we felt sorry for them. But they’re so young. I must admit, I didn’t expect to be singing and playing at the level I am now. It keeps things interesting. We were in South America last year and the crowds were amazing, the best. You come out to that, and it’s hard to say no to that… even though I am over 30. I always say at the end of all my concerts, “See ya next time.” And I mean it. I’ll do it as long as they’ll let me.

5 de enero de 1976 muere Mal Evans, es más conocido como el roadie, asistente, y amigo de la extremadamente popular banda de rock The Beatles.

Evans trabajaba como técnico de comunicaciones para el Servicio Postal británico en 1962 la primera vez que oyó que los Beatles actuaban en el Cavern Club de Liverpool. Finalmente se hizo amigo del grupo y pronto fue contratado como roadie.

Evans conducía la furgoneta del grupo cuando salían de gira, montaba y probaba los equipos, y después volvía a recogerlo todo.

Cuando los Beatles dejaron de hacer giras en 1966, Evans continuó siendo su amigo y trabajando con ellos en el estudio. Incluso participó en muchas grabaciones de los Beatles, entre otras cosas puso su voz en "Yellow Submarine", tocó el órgano Hammond en "You Won't See Me", la armónica en "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!", la pandereta en "Dear Prudence", la trompeta en "Helter Skelter", hizo coros en "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" y en la canción inédita "What's The New Mary Jane" y contó en voz alta los compases en los cortes de la canción "A Day in the Life" (Evans fue también uno de los cinco pianistas que tocaron simultáneamente el último acorde de esta canción).

HERMANA DE GEORGE ESCRIBE NUEVO LIBRO

Louise Harrison La hermana de George Harrison está escribiendo un libro sobre él y los Beatles, Louise Harrison, de 80 años, está escribiendo un libro de memorias en torno a su hermano, el beatle George Harrison. Con el texto casi acabado, Louise está organizando fotografías inéditas, cartas y otros documentos para incluirlos en el libro. Louise Harrison asegura que su única motivación al escribirlo es que “se conozca la verdad”.

The received wisdom is that there are but two surviving Beatles: Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Absent from the celebration of the release of the Fab Four's remastered albums and the Beatles: Rock Band video game is original drummer Pete Best, the only other person on the planet who can rightfully call himself a Beatle.

With his moody good looks marking him as the heartthrob of the early Beatles, Best was behind the drum kit from 1960 till 1962, which is when he was unceremoniously and mysteriously fired from the band just as they were on the brink of their unprecedented stardom. But now, more than 45 years later, he's telling his side of the story via a method in which he communicates best: through music. Last year, Best and his group released the album 'Haymans Green,' named after his Liverpool neighborhood, whose songs chronicle the life and times of the man who supplied the "atom beat" for the Beatles.

Though Best commonly has been portrayed as sullen and introverted during his Beatle days, he couldn't have been more affable and forthcoming as he reminisced with Spinner, without a trace of bitterness, about his time in the group. He holds forth on how the 10 tracks he played on that were included in the Beatles 'Anthology' collection vindicates his skill as a drummer (and made him financially set for life), theorizes on exactly why he was kicked out of the Beatles by his bandmates, confirms the debauchery of the Beatles' early days in Hamburg, Germany, and recalls how he occasionally found humor in being the most famous fired person in the world.

What is it about Liverpool that has inspired so many great musicians, the Beatles being just one example?

It's something I think has always been there. If you're from Liverpool, you realize its musical heritage. Even before Merseybeat, it was always a hotbed for musicians, whether it was jazz, singers, big bands -- you name it, it emanated from Liverpool. It still does. Liverpool was an industrial town, a poor town. The people fought hard for what they wanted to achieve and there was a hunger there, and that hunger has remained with the musicians. Today, it's still a hotbed for music. I think it always will be.

When you were in the Beatles, you wanted to be successful, of course. Did you think there would be big things in store for the band?

I think we knew that there were big things in store. You could call it arrogance, self-confidence, big-headedness -- we knew because of what we had done at a very early age. We'd taken Hamburg by storm. We were basically unknown, a mediocre band, but on the first night of playing the opening show at the Casbah on Dec. 10, Liverpool was our oyster. We'd conquered it. The word was on the street: "You've got to see these guys, you've got to see the Beatles." We knew if we could get a recording contract and into the English charts, that would be the start of something big. To be totally realistic, no one at that stage thought we were gonna become the icons of the music industry as the world knows them today. We were concerned with getting a No. 1 record, and we were confident enough to say we could achieve that. What happened afterwards was a total different type of dream altogether.

Who was your closest friend in the band, and did you feel betrayed by him when you were sacked?

My closest mate was John Lennon. I liked the sense he gave off, the way he carried himself, the way he wouldn't back down from anything. I thought, "There's a guy who has the same backbone as myself." In Hamburg, John and I spent many nights propping the bars up together. He used to reminisce about different things, girlfriends who had come to him and family life and all the other bits and pieces. I realized there was another side to him. There was the front people saw -- the caustic, aggressive person -- which was a self-defense mechanism. Behind the scenes, there was another side to John. He was a romantic, a family man, very tender, very loving. That, to me, made him the complete person. John said many years afterward, "Pete was my best mate and I feel as though I let him down." For a man to stand up and be brave enough to say that, that to me is like, "OK, mate. It didn't happen, but I appreciate what you said."

One reason given for the other Beatles getting rid of you is the quality of your drumming, but then the Beatles' 'Anthology' collection came out in 1995 with you playing on 10 tracks and people could judge for themselves. Do you feel vindicated as a musician?

Being on 'Anthology,' people had a bigger insight into what my drumming was about. From that point of view, I've always held my head up high and said, "Yes, it wasn't the drumming ability." There have been conspiracy theories -- the hairstyle, jealousy, antisocial, didn't speak enough, Brian [Epstein, the Beatles' manager] may have felt threatened -- it goes on and on. I've long passed that.

It's fair to assume that being on 'Anthology' also has changed your financial situation quite a bit.

To be quite honest, I've held my hands out, clapped 'em and said, "Thank you very much." To actually be included on 'Anthology' came as a total surprise to me. And then when they actually turned around and said that we're gonna pay you for it, that was an even better thing. Yes, financially it gave me security for many, many years to come. It's provided security for my family. But the other side of things, which is important to me as well and I think this tends to get eclipsed because people always look at the financial side of things, is [the Beatles] could have put me on one track -- OK, I ended up on 10 tracks. It was a bit like, "Thanks, Pete, we're gonna show the public what you were about and how much you contributed to the formation of the Beatles in the early days."

Is it true that since the day you were kicked out of the Beatles, they haven't talked to you? Have you never heard from them?

You find that hard to believe, but it is true. I played three of four times on the same bill as them as the support band, so we'd be coming off and they were going onstage. There were things to be said but that wasn't the place to hear your differences, onstage, so there was no communication. We'd pass like ships in the night. Some people say, "Well, why the hell didn't you just pick up the phone?" and I've always said, "Well, have you ever tried to phone a Beatle? It just doesn't happen." You couldn't get to them.

You were out there playing and recording in your own band in the mid-'60s. Are you proud of the work you did after the Beatles?

Yeah! I'm being quite honest. Anyone who knows the history of the Pete Best Band or the Combo, we were on the verge of breaking in in America. In the mid-'60s, I had great songwriters, we wrote some great stuff. We were that close to actually cutting it in America, as I've said, we got involved in the musicians union wrangle that was going on in those days. I could have dumped my boys, I could have played with American musicians, but I couldn't have looked them in the eyes. I'd have done exactly to them what happened to me! We had a sit-down and I said, "Look, we've been away from Liverpool a long time. Things have changed. We're gonna find an uphill struggle when we go back again." Yeah, we were performing, but we weren't getting the same kudos that we had before. In '68, I decided "OK, enough's enough." I had given it a shot. It wasn't meant to be.

After you quit making music in the late '60s, it was reported you went into a bit of a depression. What turned you around?

I think "depression" is too severe a word. That makes it look as though you sat there, you looked at the four walls and you wouldn't go outside. That to me is depression. It wasn't [that]. It was very a much of, I was chasing as hard, as fast as I could. OK, so it felt as though you were banging your head against a brick wall sometimes. But you're a musician, you have to persevere. Some days you'd be up, some days you'd be down. It's as simple as that.

What kinds of jobs did you have after your musical career first ended?

I thought because I had educational qualifications that I could walk into a job. Jobs were plenty, not like they are now. But I found that I'd fill in a great application form, got to the interviews and they'd sit down and say, "Take a seat, Pete. Tell us what you've done since school." And I'd say, "I've been a rock drummer" [laughs]. Even though I had the educational qualifications, the personality for the job, they couldn't take the risk. Because they felt, and it happened on numerous occasions, someone was going to come along, the man in the big white suit with the big fat cigar, and say, "Come back again, I'll make you a rock star." So I was getting frustrated with this, and I turned around and said, "OK, the first manual job that comes along, I'm gonna take it." The first job I could get my hands on was to work in a bakery. I held that down for about 12 months to prove to people that I was now finished with the show business side. And then the civil service threw me a lifeline because of the education qualifications. And I stayed with them until I took retirement. I started off as a humble employment officer and ended up being training manager for the northwest of England.

Did anyone point out the irony that you were an employment officer but you were fired from one of the most important jobs ever?

A few people, when they saw me sitting behind the table or behind the counter, turned around and said, "Are you actually Pete?" and I'd say, "Yeah," and it's just like, "How ironic you're sitting there finding us work ..." That's Liverpool humor for you.

Who or what inspired you to get back into music with 'Haymans Green,' an autobiographical album about your Beatle days?

It was always set in stone that we were gonna do it. I suppose the easiest way to explain it is, it was part of a trilogy in a way. My brothers Roag, Rory and myself wrote a book called 'The Beatles: The True Beginnings,' which in a way was the template for the documentary DVD, which came out called 'Best of the Beatles' in America and Canada and 'Pete Best of the Beatles' when it was released globally. In the documentary, we inserted three original tracks pertaining to my life story, and the response to that was absolutely fantastic. That was the green light for us to put the third part into action.

A couple of songs on the album are about the wild side of the Beatles' residency in Hamburg in the early '60s. Was it really that decadent?

It was. To put it in perspective, we were young kids out in Hamburg and we were elevated very quickly to rock star status even though we hadn't got records out. That was how we were accepted by the people of Hamburg and the kids there. We had girls flocking to our beds, people buying us drinks -- we were treated like kings. When we came back and told people the stories, the other bands in Liverpool stood there gobsmacked. The jaws dropped, it was just like, "That went on? You can get your hands on that?" Of course, that opened the doors for all the other bands from Liverpool. Then bands from the rest of the world poured into Hamburg. The craziness grew and grew and grew.

How does it feel after all these years to finally get this level of recognition for your contributions to the Beatles' legacy?

When I came back into show business in '88 after spending 20-odd years in the civil service, it wasn't planned. I was persuaded to do a one-off convention in Liverpool, which I thought was just gonna be an appearance for posterity's sake -- show the kids what this old fellow was all about. At the end of the performance, my mother and wife came over and said, "Pete, you don't know it, you're gonna be going into show business again," to which I erupted in heartfelt laughter. But here I am 20 years down the line and enjoying every moment of it.

DIEZ AÑOS DE LA IDA DE GEORGE

La ciudad de Liverpool, en el norte de Inglaterra, rinde este martes homenaje con varios actos, entre ellos dos conciertos, al beatle George Harrison en el décimo aniversario de su muerte.

El que fuera guitarrista del famoso cuarteto británico, que también desarrolló una notable carrera en solitario, falleció cuando tenía solo 58 años, tras la complicación de un cáncer de pulmón, dos años después de ser atacado con un cuchillo por un perturbado en su propia casa.

Los conciertos en homenaje al malogrado músico, autor de éxitos como "Blow Away" o "All Those Years Ago", se celebrarán en los locales de George's Hall en The Cavern Club, donde solía tocar el grupo del que formaba parte junto con Paul McCartney, John Lennon y Ringo Starr.

También en homenaje a Harrison las banderas del ayuntamiento de Liverpool y del St George's Hall ondean a media asta, según informó a los medios locales el organizador de estos actos Denise Theophilus.

GEORGE HARRISON ODIABA LA FAMA

GEORGE HARRISON WASN'T really "the quiet Beatle," said his friend and Traveling Wilburys bandmate Tom Petty. "He never shut up. He was the best hang you could imagine." To those who knew Harrison well, he was also the most stubborn Beatle, the least showbizzy, even less in thrall to the band's myth than John Lennon. Harrison was fond of repeating a phrase he attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, "Create and preserve the image of your choice," which is odd, because his choice seemed to be no image at all. He was an escape artist, forever evading labels and expectations.

In his time, Harrison challenged Lennon and McCartney's songwriting primacy; almost single-handedly introduced the West to the rest of the world's music through his friendship with sitar master Ravi Shankar; became the first person to make rock 'n' roll a vehicle for both unabashed spiritual expression and, with the Concert for Bangladesh, large-scale philanthropy; had the most Hollywood success of any Beatle, producing movies including Monty Python's Life of Brian; and belied a reputation as a recluse by touring with Eric Clapton and putting together the Wilburys, a band that was as much social club as supergroup.

As Martin Scorsese's two-part HBO documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World makes clear, Harrison had no casual pursuits: He followed his interests in the ukulele, in car racing, in gardening, and especially in meditation and Eastern religion with fierce energy. "George had a really curious mind, and when he got into something, he wanted to know everything," says his widow, Olivia Harrison, in the companion book to the film (published by Abrams). Olivia met George in 1974 and married him four years later. "He had a crazy side, too," she says. "He liked to have fun, you know."

Harrison's first wife, Pattie Boyd, described him veering between periods of intense meditation and heavy partying, with no middle ground. "He would meditate for hour after hour," she wrote in her memoir, Wonderful Tonight. "Then, as if the pleasures of the flesh were too hard to resist, he would stop meditating, snort coke, have fun, flirting and partying."

In 1965, Harrison dropped acid, and all at once, he didn't believe in Beatles. "It didn't take long before he realized, 'This isn't it,'" says Olivia. "He realized, 'This is not going to sustain me. It's not going to do it for me.'" Around that time he began to feel physically unsafe in crowds. "With what was going on," he said, "with presidents getting assassinated, the whole magnitude of our fame made me nervous."

Harrison was just 27 when the band broke up.

Beatlemania had left him with something like post-traumatic stress disorder. "If you had 2 million people screaming at you, I think it would take a long time to stop hearing that in your head," says Olivia. "George was not suited to it."

Harrison deepened his friendships with Bob Dylan ("They had a soul connection," Olivia says) and Eric Clapton, and his time with the two solo artists showed him a way forward. As the Beatles imploded, in 1970, he stepped up with the critically acclaimed triple album All Things Must Pass, letting loose a storehouse of songs that had never made it onto Beatles albums.

The next year, at Ravi Shankar's request, Harrison persuaded Clapton, Dylan, and Ringo Starr, among others, to assemble for the Concert for Bangladesh, which set the template for every all-star rock benefit of the next 40 years. The concert was a triumph, but the aftermath was a painful mess, as Harrison's efforts to get the proceeds to refugees bumped against tax codes and bureaucracies.

His marriage was also collapsing. Harrison was drinking too much, partying too hard, sleeping around. "Senses never gratified / Only swelling like a tide / That could drown me in the material world," he sang, wearily, on the title track of his next album, Living in the Material World.

Harrison went out on the road as a solo artist in 1974, but this was his last tour, save for a short 1991 Japan jaunt. With lengthy Shankar sets opening the show, and his refusal to play familiar Beatles songs (he'd shout his way through halfhearted versions of "Something"), the reviews were brutal. Harrison was unnerved by the rowdy crowds and his hard-partying backup band — it didn't feel like his world anymore. "George talked a lot about his nervous system, that he just didn't want to hear loud noise anymore," says Olivia, who began dating him the year of the tour. "He didn't want to be startled. He didn't want to be stressed."

Harrison would go on to release seven more solo albums, but he became progressively less interested in a conventional career arc. "George wasn't seeking a career," says Petty. "He didn't really have a manager or an agent. He was doing what he wanted. I don't think he valued rock stardom at all."

His relationship with Olivia centered him, and he eased back on the partying. Harrison was ecstatic when the couple had their only child, Dhani, in 1978. His advice to his son was to "be happy and meditate," says Dhani, who grew up in Friar Park, the 120-room mansion in the English countryside that Harrison purchased in 1970. The property was beautiful and mysterious, with caves, gargoyles, waterfalls, and stained glass installed by Sir Frank Crisp, an eccentric millionaire who'd owned it until his death, in 1919. Harrison turned his energies to restoring the 35-acre property's gardens, which had fallen into disrepair.

AS A SMALL boy, Dhani says, "I was pretty sure he was just a gardener," a reasonable conclusion since Harrison would work 12-hour days planting trees and flowers. "Being a gardener and not hanging out with anyone and just being home, that was pretty rock 'n' roll, you know?" says Dhani.

After a five-year gap between albums, Harrison enlisted producer Jeff Lynne for 1987's Cloud Nine, which won him a
No. 1 hit with "Got My Mind Set on You," a rollicking cover of a '60s obscurity. More important, a session to record a B side — a casual collaboration with Lynne, Dylan, Petty, and Roy Orbison — led him to the Traveling Wilburys, the post-Beatles project he enjoyed most.

He reveled in being in a band again, not to mention collaborating with Dylan, his friend and hero. The Wilburys recorded two albums (Dhani remembers hanging with Jakob Dylan and playing Duck Hunt on his Nintendo while the band worked on the second one downstairs), but never managed a live show. "Every time George had a joint and a few beers, he would start talking about touring," says Petty. "I think once or twice we even had serious talks about it, but nobody would really commit to it." A third Wilburys album was always a possibility. "We never thought we were gonna run out of time," says Petty.

Instead, after a quick, 13-date tour of Japan with Clapton in 1991, Harrison became a gardener again. "He didn't want to have any obligations," says Olivia. He kept writing and recording songs in his home studio, but turned down offers to appear on awards shows, or to do almost anything. "I've just let go of all of that," he said. "I don't care about records, about films, about being on television, or all that stuff."

In 1997, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, and underwent radiation treatment. Two years later, a mentally deranged man somehow made his way into Friar Park, and in a horrific, prolonged tussle, stabbed Harrison through a lung before Olivia subdued him. Harrison made a full recovery, but Dhani believes the injuries weakened his father as he subsequently battled lung cancer. The disease spread to his brain, and after a long fight, George Harrison died on Nov. 29, 2001. Olivia is convinced that the hospital room filled with a glowing light as his soul left his body. "He would say, 'Look, we're not these bodies, let's not get hung up on that,'" says Petty, who has practiced meditation ever since his friend introduced him to it. "George would say, 'I just want to prepare myself so I go the right way, and go to the right place.'" He pauses, and laughs. "I'm sure he's got that worked out."

This summer, Dhani Harrison, now 33, returned to Friar Park and gazed out at the garden for a long while. It had never looked better — the trees his father planted had finally grown. "He's probably laughing at me," says Dhani, "saying, 'That's what it's supposed to look like.' You don't build a garden for yourself, right now — you build a garden for future generations. My father definitely had a long view."

Los Beatles ofrecieron su último concisrto en San Francisco, California

The Beatles dieron su último concierto en vivo el 29 de agosto de 1966 en el Candlestick Park de San Francisco.

Marcó el final de un período de cuatro años dominado por giras que incluyeron cerca de 1,400 apariciones en conciertos a nivel internacional. En esta última gira el grupo habia tenido una serie de inconvenientes y dificultades que venían de unas declaraciones de John Lennon a la periodista Maureen Cleave del Evening Standard acerca de que Lennon habia dicho que "Los Beatles eran mas populares que Jesús" el comentario paso desapercibido en Inglaterra pero al otro lado del Atlántico comenzaron a haber demasiadas dificultades y hostilidades por parte de los medios de comunicación norteaméricanos incluido quema de discos y boicotear los conciertos del grupo por parte del Ku Klux Khan.

Ni bien el grupo llegó a Estados Unidos a la ciudad de Chicago el 11 de agosto de 1966 Lennon tuvo que pedir disculpas por sus comentarios. Con todo este ambiente hóstil decidieron no continuar presentandose en vivo ya estaban hastiados sobretodo Lennon y Harrison ; McCartney tuvo que darles la razón. Las giras se habian vuelto peligrosas para su propia integridad física.

El día lunes 29 de agosto de 1966 The Beatles dieron su último concierto de la gira norteamericana. Siendo sus teloneros The Cyrkle, The Ronettes y The Remains. Ese día tocaron en el Estadio Candlestick Park de San Francisco ante aproximadamente 25,000 personas (el estadio tenía capacidad para 42,500) y el set de canciones duró solamente 33 minutos.

Entre los visitantes detrás del escenario se encontraban la cantante folk Joan Baez y Mimi Farina y para variar una enorme cantidad de periodistas.A las 9:27 de la noche comenzó el set de The Beatles, que incluyó las siguientes canciones que fueron tocadas a lo largo de la gira : "Rock and Roll Music", "She's a Woman", "If I Needed Someone", "Day Tripper", "Baby's in Black", "I Feel Fine", "Yesterday", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Nowhere Man", "Paperback Writer" y "Long Tall Sally". También se dice que al final John empezo a tocar unos acordes de "In My Life" pero para todo esto ya la actuación en Candlestick Park pasaria para la posterioridad. Los fans histéricos seguian chillando pero ignoraban que este seria el último concierto.

El concierto fue grabado en casi su totalidad a pedido de Paul, quedando cortada Long Tall Sally ya que se quedaron sin cinta. Tony Barrow agente de prensa del grupo fue el encargado de grabar el concierto en una grabadora de cassette Philips con un micrófono marca Beyer.

Barrow pudo permanecer en el campo durante la actuación del grupo y grabarlos directamente desde los gigantes parlantes. El de San Francisco se cuenta como el último por haber sido organizado en un estadio y con venta de entradas al público. Se sabe que una fan de 15 años filmó partes del concierto un extracto se ve en el documental The Unseen Beatles. Hasta la fecha no se sabe si el concierto fue filmado en su totalidad.

Hay aparte otro documental interesante títulado The Beatles Live In San Francisco en el cual se puede apreciar los conciertos que el grupo dió en esta localidad incluido entrevistas a varias personas que estuvieron presentes y al famoso fotógrafo Jim Marshall que captó varias fotos entre bastidores y en el concierto final.

La decisión de terminar con las giras ya había sido tomada. Todo el grupo sabía que este show era el último, y tal vez por eso tanto John como Paul llevaron consigo al escenario cámaras de fotos con las que retrataron a los miembros de la banda para la posterioridad.Candlestick Park significó el fin de las giras para The Beatles y la locura que habian generado durante todos esos años.

La Beatlemania la de los gritos ensordecedores de los conciertos llegaba a su final pero en si Candlestick Park y sobretodo la ciudad de San Francisco fue el inicio del movimiento hippie. Un año después el Monterey Pop Festival lo demostraria The Beatles no estuvieron presentes pero en espíritu acompañaron a muchas de las bandas que se presentaron.

John Lennon : "En nuestra última gira nos traian ciegos, lisiados y niños deformes en nuestras habitaciones y la mamá de un niño decia, "Vamos, besalo posiblemente hagas que recupere la vista. Nosotros no somos crueles. Habiamos visto demasiada tragedia en Merseyside pero cuando una madre grita, solo tocalo y posiblemente vuelva a caminar, queriamos correr, llorar vaciar nuestros bolsillos. Ibamos a seguir normales si eso lo mataba."

George Harrison expreso su alivio en el avión de regreso a casa: "Eso es todo. Ya no soy un Beatle", refiriéndose a que toda esa locura habia terminado para él. La Beatlemania habia terminado en Candlestick Park para dar paso a los años de buscar el perfeccionamiento de sus canciones en el estudio de grabación. Obras trascendentales que vinieron luego y que los mismos Beatles se veian imposibilitados de tocar en vivo, canciones mas elaboradas y con mayores arreglos.

Ringo Starr has claimed The Beatleswere lucky to have him as their drummer

The 70-year-old musician - who replaced former drummer Pete Best two years after the original line-up was formed - claimed he was better known in Liverpool than The Beatles when he joined, and they were fortunate he chose to work with them.

He told Live magazine: "Within Liverpool, I was a lot more well know than them. Rory and the Hurricanes (Starr's former band) were big shots in the city. We had the suits. That was our claim to fame. The Beatles were lucky to get me. It wasn't just that I was a big shot; I was a cool drummer."

Ringo is currently touring with his own group Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band, and revealed that his former band mate Sir Paul McCartney says he is too busy to work with Ringo whenever the drummer asks him.

He continued: "Every time I ask him to tour with the All Starrs, he says he is too busy. We're as close as we want to be. We're the only two remaining Beatles, although he likes to think he's the only one. MAS ANALISIS DE LA FAMOSA FOTO

Sólo hizo seis fotos y la quinta fue la buena. Iain MacMillan (1938-2006) tenía que subirse a una escalera y fotografiar desde arriba a cuatro hombres cruzando el paso de cebra de Abbey Road por el que no paraban de circular coches y autobuses.

Tres llevaban trajes del diseñador Tommy Nutter, célebre por reinventar el traje estilo Savile Row. Les sentaban bien. Sobre todo al de blanco. Era mucho llamarse Lennon y no dar la nota. El otro que destacaba iba cien por cien jean. Muy hippie y con la cabeza en la India. Al más guapín le obligaron a quitarse las sandalias con las que compareció a la sesión. Sale descalzo. Ringo, como siempre, hace de Ringo.

La foto es mucha foto. Miles de turistas intentan reproducirla cada año. El paso de cebra de Abbey Road aparece en todas las guías turísticas de Londres.

A diario lo cruzan pandillas de japoneses, familias con niños brincando, gente haciendo el pino, novios con trajes de boda, madrileños con la camiseta de Cristiano Ronaldo... En la página web de los estudios de Abbey Road, donde los Beatles grababan, han puesto una webcam que permite asistir a la vida diaria de la intersección.

"Uno no podía ir así, descalzo por Londres"

El viernes ocho de agosto de 1969 era solamente el escenario de una foto. Iba a ser la cubierta del último disco de los Beatles, grabado entre febrero y agosto y publicado en septiembre de ese año. La última canción se titulaba The End y así era.

Las Snap Galleries de Londres, especializadas en fotografía musical, exponen Beatles and Bystanders: the Unknowns at Abbey Road (Beatles y transeúntes: los desconocidos de Abbey Road). La exposición es un viaje al interior de la portada mágica y descubre todos los detalles, por mínimos que parezcan, de los habitantes de esas seis fotografías.

La historia de Paul Cole es una de ellas. En la foto elegida para el álbum, en la acera derecha, es el hombre que mira curioso la escena. Cole, que murió en 2008, era un turista estadounidense que esperaba a su mujer dando una vuelta.

“Ya he visto suficientes museos por hoy. Yo me quedo por aquí para ver lo que se cuece por la calle”, le dijo a la parienta. Mientras hablaba con un policía sobre los pormenores de la ciudad, vio “a esos tipos cruzar la calle en fila como unos patos. Pensé que eran una panda de chiflados, porque tenían un aspecto bastante radical. Uno no podía ir así, descalzo por Londres".

Entre los objetos que por casualidad también se hicieron inolvidables está el quinto beatle: un Volkswagen escarabajo (beetle) que pertenecía a un residente de la calle y que desatóconspiranoias sólo con la matrícula: LMW 281F.

Los amigos de los rumores decían que Paul había fallecido y que lo sustituía un actor. Fabulaban que andaba descalzo en la foto como símbolo de su muerte y que la matrícula escondía un mensaje.

Las tres letras iniciales eran las siglas de Linda McCartney Widow (Linda McCartney viuda). 281F se tenía que entender como 28 if... (28 si...), e indicaba los años que el beatle tendría si (if) no hubiera muerto. Al coche le robaron la matrícula varias veces tras editarse el disco y el dueño lo malvendió por 2.530 libras en una subasta.

Dos mujeres hablando, la chica del top violeta, la furgoneta de reparto tras la que se ve un brazo, los pasajeros del bus 159... La muestra amplía a los personajes de las seis fotografías de Iain MacMillan, con la esperanza de que si alguno de estos personajes se reconoce ahora,se identifique como lo hizo Paul Cole, que, por cierto, compró Abbey Road pero nunca lo escuchó.

Sir Paul McCartney is getting married for the third time to his girlfriend of four years, Nancy Shevell. According to People.com, the couple have recently become engaged. The pair met in the summer of 2007 after McCartney's highly publicized and bitter divorce from then-wife Heather Mills.

Though the 68-year-old Beatle is 17 years older than the 51-year-old Shevell, it seems that the couple is ready to take the plunge. Not much is known about the New York businesswoman -- a board member of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority as well as vice president of a family-owned transportation conglomerate -- but Sir Paul is seemingly head-over-heels.

An unnamed source tells People, "They have the right chemistry. They're both cool, chilled-out and optimistic." The source continued by saying that Shevell has also won over McCartney's five children. Best wishes to the happy couple.

Were it not an English hospital worker who used percussion instruments to help relieve boredom of patients undergoing long-term treatment, a 13-year-old kid battling tuberculosis named Richard Starkey might never have fallen in love with the drums, changed his name to Ringo Starr and become part of the biggest rock band on the planet.

“That’s where it all started for me,” Starr, 70, said Thursday morning a few minutes after briefly sharing a stage with 17-year-old drummer and brain cancer survivor Alexx Kipp, whose long-held wish to meet the Beatle was granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation and theHard Rock International restaurant chain. The event was the kickoff of a new partnership between the two organizations designed to help Make-A-Wish accommodate even more requests than the 14,000 it grants in the U.S. each year, about 900 of those involving celebrities.

“You like those drums?” Starr asked Kipp as they stood behind a gleaming black-and-white set of Ludwigs, the brand long associated with him.

“Hell, yeah!” beamed Kipp, who also has Tourette's syndrome and punctuated the dialogue with his musical hero with joyful birdlike chirps and whistles.

“They’re yours,” Starr told him.

It took several minutes, and a few prompts from his mother, father and sister, who had accompanied him to Hollywood from their home in Arlington, Va., before it set in for Alexx that the event not only included meeting his favorite drummer from his favorite band, but also a new set of drums to boot. Or to bash.

Alexx sat on one of two adjacent black stools set up behind the snare drum and laid down a steady rock beat, then Starr pulled up next to him to add some accents on a floor tom and one of the cymbals.

“We saw his doctor in November, and they consider him cured,” said Alexx’s mother, Sarah Pitkin. Playing drums since he was 8, along with Beatles recordings and in tandem with his father’s guitar strumming, has played a major role in Alexx’s ability to weather seven rounds of chemotherapy and one month of radiation treatment for his germinoma brain tumor, Pitkin said.

His parents said he’d expressed the desire to meet Starr for years, and the family logged his request with Make-A-Wish about a year ago.

“Alexx came to me one morning and he said, ‘Dad, I had a dream last night and I met Ringo,’ ” Charles Kipp said. “This was before we knew it was going to happen. About a week later we got the call. I told him, ‘It looks like your dream came true.’ ”

Make-A-Wish President and Chief Executive David Williams was on hand, noting that about 27,000 children in the U.S. from ages 2½ to 18 are diagnosed each year with life-threatening conditions, which makes them eligible for the foundation’s services. A little over half have wishes fulfilled by Make-A-Wish, which no longer limits participation to those with terminal illnesses as was the case early in its 31-year history, Williams said.

“Other organizations grant about 3,000 wishes,” he said, “so you see there are still a lot of people we don’t reach. Our goal is to be able to grant every wish.”

The partnership with Hard Rock International aims to help spread the word about the foundation’s mission. Hard Rock locations will carry new T-shirts with artwork created by Starr and carrying his pet phrase “Peace/Love” on the front, his signature on the back. Proceeds from sales will benefit his Lotus Foundation charity directly supporting Make-A-Wish.

Starr toured the Hollywood location with Alexx and his family, stopping at a wall holding a framed drum head, split down the center, that he had donated to the chain’s collection of rock-star memorabilia.

“It was right in the middle of a gig, and it just split. But you just keep going,” Starr told Alexx. "Never stop -- that’s the deal.”

A few minutes later, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, vegetarian slim in a black blazer over black T-shirt and jeans, spoke of the impact on him of taking part in the Make-A-Wish program, for which he had granted about half a dozen other requests before Thursday.

“It's huge," he said. "It puts you in your place. You think you’ve got a cold -- you’re all, ‘Oh, what about me?’ Then you help these kids….You think of the families. I’ve got children too, and it’s got to be hard.”

One 8-year-old girl he met through a European Make-A-Wish chapter -- 41 countries have them -- wanted to meet Starr after coming out of a coma.

“Somehow -- I don’t know how it happened -- but ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ was on TV and she fell in love with Ringo,” Starr said. “This is only a couple of years ago, so I was saying to the people who were setting it up, ‘You’d better give her a photo of me now -- things have changed!’ ” he said with a hearty laugh. “But she recognized me and we had a lot of fun.”

While recovering from his treatment, Alexx recently took part in a music school recital, where he played drums with the Lennon-McCartney song “In My Life,” and a school talent show at which he played Starr’s whimsical “Octopus’s Garden.”

Charles Kipp said Alexx’s next musical goal is to learn “I Am the Walrus.” From now on, he’ll be practicing on a drum set broken in by the man who played the original.

“I get the easy bit,” Starr said. “I come, I say hi, we hang out, we have a bit of fun….

“In the band I was in,” he added, “we knew when we’d done the take, because it just feels good. It’s like golf: When you hit that ball right, you know. You feel it -- you feel the connection. And connecting is good.”

Esta semana me di en meterme en cuanta página beatle hubiera en Facebook y me resultó de gran satisfacción por los resultados inesperados que obtuve.

Primero, me contacté con muchos beatlemaníacos alrededor del mundo igual o más locos por los Beatles que yo. Me llenó de mucha aleghría el ser admitido en círculos en Liverpool, México, Argentina, Estados Unidos y Francia en los cuales la vibra de los 4 Fantásticos inunda el ambiente, dejándome un sabor a años viejos, y la sensación de estar entre amigos conocidos muchos años atrás.

Segundo, me puse en contacto con personas muy cercanas a los propios genios: My Pang, esta japonesa vivió por un año con John Lennon sustituyendo a Yoko Ono en un período en el que el matrimonio de ellos estaba en las rocas. Decidieron separarse por ese período para darse su espacio y después tomar una decisión definitiva sobre si se divorciaban o no. Como John estaba muy acostumbrado a la cultura japonesa, a sugerencias de Yoko (siempre en control de la relación), aceptó la compañía de May quien en esos días era casi una adolescente. Los resultados son de todos conocidos: después del año, se reunieron de nuevo John y Yoko, renovaron sus votos y hasta encargaron un bebé, Sean Lennon, nacido en 1975. En lo que a May Pang respecta, John describió el año con ella como "un fin de semana perdido".

Tercero, conseguí la amistad de Sir Paul MacArtney. No estoy tan despistado como para creer que el bajista, poeta, pintor, músico, compositor, en fin genio miembro de la banda de rock más importante de la historia de la humanidad, fue quien tomó la decisión de aceptar mi amistad en FB, pero me causa una gran alegría la ilusión de ser su amigo, ya sea que algún asistente encargado de su publicidad decidiera que yo tenía el "profile" para ser aceptado, o que algún charlatán se haya tomado el abuso dee crear una página suplantando al genio, either way it's OK.

Quien no me queda duda que no es ella, es Jane Asher, quien fuera la novia de MacArtney en los años sesenta y lo cortó porque interfería en su carrera de actriz, por otra parte inspiradora de canciones inmortales como Yesterday. Ella aceptó mi amistad fracciones de segundos después que se la ofrecí. Yo hice como que estaba encantado por ser su amigo, pero fue paja. Asaber qué chulada de impostora no es la que lleva esa página, pero de todas maneras uso mi imaginación para creer que es Jane la que me aceptó. Qué importa, después de todo es solo el FB.

Lo que sí es genuino es haber encontrado tres tesoros en Border's aquí en San Rafael. Sucede que la célebre librer está liquidando, por cierre del negocio, su sucursal de esta linda ciudad, y vagando en sus alrededores se me ocurrió ir a echar un vistazo a ver si encontraba los libros "In his Own Write" de John Lennon, y" The Beatles", de Hunter Davies, el biografo de los genios más creíble, ya que anduvo con ellos viajando por todo el mundo en sus años de gloria y fue directamente allegado de todos los que fgormaban parte del círculo más estrecho de ellos, incluyendo gente de negocios, parientes y amigos. Ambos libros les he buscado como aguja en un pajar en todas partes del mundo incluyendo El Salvador, Bélgica, Francia, México, Estados Unidos, Londres, y hasta Liverpool, nada!

Pues ayer, en una librería en quiebra de un pueblito insignificante de Estados Unidos, estaban juntitos los dos libros que había buscado por más de treina años. Y no solo eso, a su lado estaba un Diario de presentaciones de los Beatles que arranca desde la fecha del nacimiento de Yoko Ono (la persona de más edad entre el círculo de influencias), hasta la de la última presentación de MacArtney en Sudamérica el próximo mes de mayo.

NUEVO DOCUMENTAL SOBRE GEORGE MARTIN

A new 90-minute documentary about legendary Beatles record producer Sir George Martin will premiere on Britain's BBC-2 TV network over the Easter weekend. The film is titled "Produced by George Martin" and includes new footage with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

"Produced by George Martin" will air on BBC-2 on Saturday April 23rd, which by coincidence is celebrated in England (and many other European nations) as "St. George's Day," a day commemorated by several nations and cities of whom St. George is the patron saint.

The film documents the six-decade professional history of the 85-year-old knighted record producer who discovered and signed the Beatles in June 1962, and then produced them throughout their recording career, and who also produced several albums with Paul McCartney and Wings. The film features specially-shot new sequences with Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Other interviewees include vocalist Cilla Black and Monty Python's Michael Palin.

Londoners may see a sneak preview of the film when it is screened this coming Wednesday (April 13th) at the British Film Institute's flagship National Film Theatre on London's South Bank. Click here for more info on this special screening.

There are preliminary plans for the film to be televised in other countries including the USA in 2012. There are also discussions for the film to be screened at prestigious international film festivals.

In addition to chronicling his pioneering production work with the Beatles, the film looks at his extensive producing experience before and after the Beatles. This includes his early work with classical music - and with comedic performers such as Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, The Goons and Beyond The Fringe. And a focus on some of his wide-ranging post-Beatles work including film scores and album production for many major musicians.

Among the many artists produced by Sir George during his sixty-year career have been: friends and contemporaries of the Beatles such as Cilla Black, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Fourmost, Mary Hopkin; rock and pop artists such as Jeff Beck, Ultravox, Cheap Trick, John McLaughlin & The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Preston, Sinead O'Connor, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Elton John, Gary Brooker, Jimmy Webb, Neil Sedaka, Stevie Wonder and America; jazz artists such as: Ella Fitzgerald, Cleo Laine, Johnny Dankworth, Humphrey Lyttelton; and vocalists such as: Matt Monro, Kenny Rogers, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey and Celine Dion.

Según los encargados de prensa de la productora ya está confirmado el show en Río de Janeiro, pero las fechas y el lugar aún no están definidos.

Algunos rumores señalan que los conciertos serían los días 24 y 25 de mayo en el Estadio Olímpico João Havelange (Engenhão), ya que el Maracaná está cerrado por arreglos para el Mundial de Fútbol 2014 y los Juegos Olímpicos 2016.

El año pasado, Macca hizo tres conciertos en Brasil con entradas agotadas: dos en Sao Paulo y uno en Porto Alegre.

Esto vuelve a abrir la posibilidad de tener a Paul McCartney en nuestro país y reivindicarnos de aquel show ofrecido por el ex beatle el 16 de diciembre de 1993, ante un Estadio Nacional que a pesar de una gran campaña promocional no logró vender la totalidad de las entradas.

Por ahora ya se sabe que la productora a cargo de este show en Chile sería DG Medios, la cual publicó este 25 de marzo vía twitter lo siguiente: #reservateel11demayo ... Por lo que todo indica que el miércoles 11 de mayo el músico Paul McCartney tocará en el Estadio Nacional.

La gira también pasaría por Perú, mientras que en Colombia ya se desmintió.

El diario peruano El Comercio, confirmó que el empresario Jorge Ferrand está a un paso de lograr la firma para que se concrete la llegada del ex Beatle a Lima.

Si bien los rumores de una probable visita a Chile y Perú circulaban ya desde hace algún tiempo, no fue hasta que el empresario colombiano Juan Pablo Ospina reveló en una radio de su país que McCartney ya no iría a Bogotá pero sí a Chile y Perú.

“A Ospina lo conozco bien y él ya sabe que a Colombia McCartney ya no va. También iba a ir allá en principio en esta gira pero ahora solo viene a Lima y Chile, pero todavía no puedo confirmar”, señaló Jorge Ferrand.

YELLOW SUBMARINE EN LA HABANA

Cuatro décadas después de que su música fuera marginada en los medios de Cuba, los Beatles encontraron su santuario en La Habana: "Submarino amarillo", un lugar para llenar el corazón de fans y nostálgicos del más famoso grupo de rock de la historia.

La taberna, que hace honor al clásico "Yellow submarine", está ubicada en el sótano de un edificio en el céntrico barrio del Vedado, a 25 metros de la estatua de John Lennon develada en 2000 por el líder comunista Fidel Castro y convertida en lugar de tributo al ex beatle, asesinado en 1980.

Según su gerente, Yosmany Groeiro, el club abrió sus puertas "como un centro especializado en la música de los Beatles" y el rock y el pop de los años 60, como parte de una estrategia del Ministerio de Cultura de diversificar su propuesta cultural, con precios asequibles a los cubanos.

"Es un lugar para todo el que quiera venir a abrir su nostalgia. La Habana necesitaba hace muchos años un lugar como éste", porque "los amantes de los Beatles no tenían a dónde ir", comentó a la agencia AFP, Ernesto Juan Castellanos, de 48 años y uno de los directores artísticos del flamante centro nocturno.

A la derecha de la entrada al recinto, recibe a los visitantes una enorme foto de Lennon, Paul MacCartney, Ringo Starr y George Harrison, que junto con algunas de sus antológicas canciones estampadas por doquier en las paredes, hacen del club una suerte de santuario.

Caricaturas del "Cuarteto de Liverpool", ilustraciones de sus temas, entre ellos "Strawberry Fields Forever", y una barra decorada con las portadas de sus 18 discos originales completan el diseño del centro que, a diferencia de otros de la capital, no tiene pista de baile porque busca un ambiente más íntimo.

"El lugar más bello y acogedor de la ciudad, nuestra caverna. Los 'beatlemaníacos' estamos supercontentos", destacó Ana Laura, una socióloga cincuentona que no paraba de canturrear en inglés las canciones que sonaban en el club.

Para Arnaldo Rodríguez, director de la agrupación salsera "El Talismán", una de las más populares de Cuba, se trata de una "iniciativa fabulosa" porque "los Beatles son patrimonio del mundo. Todo lo que hacemos está muy influido por la música que ellos hicieron".

El "Submarino amarillo" es como "un hijo" pero sobre todo un centro cultural estatal para "promocionar su legado de paz, amor y amistad", dice Castellanos, autor de cuatro libros sobre el grupo.

Es también un estudioso de la época de "incomprensión" que sufrió la música del cuarteto en Cuba entre los 60 y 70 cuando algunos funcionarios los identificaron como "problemas ideológicos".

"Tenemos ideado hacer encuentros teóricos", comentó el director, quien entre 1996 y 1999 organizó en La Habana coloquios del grupo, que no pudo continuar por "falta de apoyo" oficial, aunque ya la música se pasaba libremente por la radio y la televisión locales.

El público que está llegando al club, abierto de martes a domingo desde la tarde y hasta la madrugada, rebasa cada día la capacidad -de 104 personas-, lo que muestra, según Castellanos, que los Beatles "no pertenecen a una generación, sino a todas".

Además de estar prohibido fumar y el reggaeton -ritmo que ha invadido los centros nocturnos de Cuba-, una tercera regla de oro rige en el "Submarino amarillo": las agrupaciones musicales invitadas deben tocar un 50% de música de los Beatles.

"Aquí pasaron de ser prohibidos a ser obligatorios", dice resuelto Castellanos.

FOTOS INEDITAS DE LOS BEATLES

MADRID.- Algunas de las fotografías que Don McCullin hizo a los Beatles en el verano de 1968 se convirtieron en iconos culturales del siglo XX, pero hasta ahora no se había mostrado el resultado íntegro de aquella sesión, que Paul McCartney recuerda como "un gran día en la calle".

"Un día en la vida de los Beatles", que acaba de publicar en español La Fábrica, ofrece en 88 imágenes, muchas de ellas inéditas, la cara más espontánea del "grupo de personas más famoso del mundo", según lo define el fotógrafo en el prólogo de este libro.

Cuenta McCullin -quien en la época era ya un curtido corresponsal de guerra- que cuando recibió una llamada telefónica en la que proponían pasar un día fotografiando a los Beatles a cambio de unos honorarios de doscientas libras (320 dólares al cambio actual) pensó "que era una broma".

"Hubiese estado dispuesto a darles yo a ellos las doscientas libras", asegura el fotógrafo, quien, acostumbrado a las imágenes de guerra, se enfrentaba en esa ocasión con algo bien distinto: cuatro tipos "en la cima de su poderío" con personalidades "muy diferentes".

McCullin los recuerda así: "John Lennon y Paul McCartney eran claramente los líderes; George Harrison era el más callado, y Ringo parecía mantenerse un poco al margen".

En julio de 1968 los Beatles estaban inmersos en la grabación del "Álbum Blanco", uno de sus proyectos artísticos más fascinantes, pero también una experiencia disgregadora que marcó el comienzo de la cuenta atrás del grupo.

"Era un período oscuro. Fue un gran disco, pero difícil de realizar", admite McCartney en la introducción del libro, donde explica que los Beatles buscaban "algo distinto" cuando pensaron en McCullin, tras haber trabajado con fotógrafos como Richard Avedon, Norman Parkinson y David Bailey.

El fotógrafo acudió a la cita con los Fab Four "sin ninguna agenda", excepto el encargo de tomar una imagen en color para la portada de la revista "Life".

Para esta foto empleó una máquina de viento ante la que los cuatro músicos sonríen. La instantánea se convirtió en una de las más famosas de la sesión y abre un libro que reconstruye el paseo que los Beatles y McCullin dieron por Londres aquel día de julio.

El recorrido incluyó parques y calles de diversas zonas de la ciudad, antes de terminar en casa de Paul McCartney en St John's Wood, donde los cuatro posaron junto a Martha, la perra del bajista.

Hay retratos individuales y fotos de grupo, la mayoría en blanco y negro. Entre ellas, los fans reconocerán la imagen utilizada para ilustrar el interior de las álbumes recopilatorios conocidos como "Rojo" y "Azul".

Los Beatles posan con naturalidad y se muestran ocurrentes ante el objetivo de McCullin, quien acababa de regresar de la guerra de Vietnam.

"Se nos ocurrió que nosotros debíamos ser la guerra. Proveeríamos el campo de batalla y todo saldría bien. Él sólo tendría que entrar en acción. Y eso fue exactamente lo que ocurrió", relata McCartney.

El fotógrafo recuerda aquel día como "un accidente del que nadie se hizo responsable". "Ellos -añade- simplemente aprovecharon cada situación para arrojarse al vacío. Se abrieron por completo".

"Un día en la vida de los Beatles" termina con una inquietante imagen en la que Lennon, que fue asesinado en 1980, posa como si estuviera muerto, rodeado por sus compañeros. Harrison, que murió en 2001, lleva puestas las célebres gafas redondas de John.

HOY CUMPLE 68 GEORGE

John was outspoken, Paul is always in the spotlight, and Ringo is just nuts. But George Harrison seemingly has often been overlooked. The 'quiet' Beatle, as he was commonly referred to, would have turned 68 today. Harrison died in 2001 after being diagnosed with lung cancer. A lifelong smoker, Harrison had previously won his fight with throat cancer in 1997, but the lung cancer, which he received treatment for until his November 2001 death, spread to his brain and was deemed inoperable.

His body was cremated following his funeral and his ashes were spread across the Ganges River in India. Harrison was passionate about Eastern philosophy and later in life became very involved in Hinduism following multiple trips to India and the surrounding countries. During his travels he began his involvement in Indian music, taking up the sitar, which he later used on several Beatles tracks (ie. "Norwegian Wood").

We miss George, but considering the Beatles' ability to defy generational gaps, his music will be appreciated for a long time.

PAUL GANA PRIMER SOLO GRAMMY

The 68-year-old former Beatle took home the solo rock vocal performance statuette for the 42-year-old Beatles tune, which he dusted off for his 2009 live album "Good Evening New York City."
It marked his 14th Grammy, of which 10 were Beatle-related, spanning 1965 to a reissue project in 1997.
Sir Paul was not there to collect the Grammy because he was attending the Baftas in London.
As a solo artist, he last won a Grammy in 1972 for his arrangement of "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey." He followed that with a pair for Wings, his post-Beatles vehicle, in 1975 and 1980.
Sir Paul frequently lands Grammy nominations - 11 since 2005 alone - but has been beaten by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Amy Winehouse and Justin Timberlake in recent years.

CURIOSIDADES SOBRE LOS BEATLES

Dicen las "malas lenguas" que una vez que John v estaba en un restaurante cenando un violinista notó su presencia y comenzó a tocar Yesterday. Luego se acercó a John y le pidió que le autografiara el violín y John se enojó mucho, casi como para rompérselo. Cuando Los Beatles fueron por primera vez a Hamburgo, Harrison fue deportado por no tener mayoría de edad para viajar a Alemania.

John Lennon dijo alguna vez: "Está muy bien que a la gente le agrade escuchar nuestra música, pero cuando empiezan a dar su opinión... se acaba la magia y da asco".

Lo que más impresionó a John acerca de Paul cuando se conocieron (1956), fue que éste sabía afinar la guitarra.

Los Beatles confesaron que habían fumado marihuana antes de presentarse ante la reina Isabel II a recibir sus medallas del Imperio Británico en 1966.

Ringo Starr siempre fue considerado el de menor relevancia como instrumentista. Sin embargo, en una entrevista, Phil Collins declaró: "Yo creo que Ringo Starr no ha sido bien considerado en su calidad de 'batero'. Desafío a cualquiera de nosotros a tocar la batería como hace Ringo en A Day in the Life".

George Harrison instaló un tocadiscos dentro de su coche, Jaguar modelo E-Type, a mediados de los sesenta.

La espactacular letra de "Yesterday", al principio no lo era tanto. Los primeros versos que McCartney compuso para ella fueron: "Scrambell eggs, baby, I love your legs".

La música de la canción "Because" de John Lennon se inspiró en la melodía "Claro de Luna" de Beethoven escuchada al revés.

En 1967, los Beatles consideraron la posibilidad de comprar una isla en Grecia aunque, finalmente, desecharon la idea.

BEATLES SERAN HOMENAJEADOS

Al cumplirse casi medio siglo desde el nacimiento de la banda, los cuatro reyes delRock serán homenajeados por artistas de todo el mundo en un álbum de tres discos respectivamente.

Festejando de esta forma los 50 años desde la creación del grupo ingles, The Beatles serán homenajeados por artistas de todos los géneros, los cuales participarán de forma grupal en la grabación de un disco triple, que de seguro, hará historia, como la hicieron ellos.

Entre las personalidades que ya confirmaron su presencia, están Yoko Ono y Julia Brad (hermana de John Lennon), entre muchísimos otros. Sin embargo el pueblo Hispanoamericano tendrá a sus representantes también, : Andrés Calamaro, Coti Sorokin y Los Súper Ratones.

Personajes destacados

Cada uno de los invitados tomará parte de alguna canción clásica del grupo y le dará su propia visión. Vale aclarar que los fondos recaudados por este disco serán destinados a una Organización No Gubernamental que nuclea a los Médicos sin fronteras.

Si bien aún el álbum no tiene titulo ni tampoco fecha de publicación, el mismo podría convertirse en el ultimo tributo que le rinde el mundo de la música al grupo que más influyo en la historia musical, valga la redundancia.

POR QUE SE SEPARARON LOS BEATLES?

La larga agonía de los Beatles ha dado pie a todo tipo de especulaciones desde el mismo momento de su disolución.

El asunto parece seguir despertado interés 40 años después, cuando una revista como Rolling Stone USA en su edición de Septiembre del 2009, dedicaba un extenso artículo retrospectivo en el que seguía indagando los avatares que llevaron a la ruptura.

En Agosto de 1966, los Beatles cerraban su gira estadounidense en Candlestick Park, San Francisco y John, George y Ringo convencían a Paul de cesar su actividad en directo de forma permanente y dejar de ofrecer conciertos. Después, se separarían durante 4 meses hasta que en Noviembre comenzaron a grabar el Sgt. Pepper’s.

Tanto Rolling Stone como muchas otras fuentes coinciden en apuntar este acontecimiento y a 1966, como año del principio del fin, tras el cual se sucederían un cúmulo de situacionesque irian minando la relación entre los miembros del grupo, hasta que el 31 de Diciembre1970, Paul McCartney presentase una demanda de disolución de las relaciones contractuales que mantenía con sus compañeros de grupo, declarándose legalmente la ruptura.

Desde otro punto de vista, 1966 puede que sea un poco pronto para considerarlo como principio del fin ya que una parte importante del trabajo de la banda, considerada por muchos como la de mayor calidad, estaba aun por llegar. A saber, 5 de los discos más importantes de la historia del rock, un film y la fundación de una empresa, Apple, que incluiría un sello para editar sus futuros proyectos.

Para tratarse de una banda que se está disolviendo, el resultado es cuanto menos encomiable.

El hecho de dejar las actuaciones en directo no resulta tan relevante si tenemos en cuenta que su etapa de conciertos, desde la fundación del grupo en 1960, duró prácticamente la mitad de su carrera, 5 años y medio. Hoy en día sería un tiempo relativamente corto para los tiempos que corren, de giras mundiales interminables, con uno ó dos años de duración.

Otras fuentes apuntan a la muerte de Brian Epstein, mítico manager de la banda, el 27 deAgosto de 1967, como momento en el que el grupo caía en el absoluto descontrol. Un descontrol un tanto particular ya que si bien, los miembros de los Beatles empezaban a actuar cada uno por su cuenta, esa misma actitud marcó las grabaciones del genial “White album”, en el que cada uno de los miembros tiraba del álbum llegando a trabajar por separado en tres estudios de grabación a la vez, considerando al resto de sus compañeros como si fueran músicos de sesión para la ocasión.

Otro posible punto donde ubicar el principio del fin, podría ser el mini-concierto ofrecido enla azotea del edificio Apple, en Savile Road, Londres, el 30 de Enero de 1969, la últimaactuación de la banda en público.

Cierto es que las relaciones entre sus componentes, llevaban avinagrándose desde 1966 pero ese es el pan nuestro de cada día en muchas bandas, desde el momento en el que traspasan la barrera que hay entre actuar y grabar por diversión a hacerlo profesionalmente por motivos de trabajo.

El concierto de la azotea se hizo para cerrar el documental que habían comenzado afilmar sobre las sesiones de grabación del “Let it be”. El documental no llegaría apublicarse entonces pero el footage recogido por su realizador, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, refleja la tensión que se palpó en el ambiente durante las grabaciones.

En las imágenes se puede ver las amargas escenas en las que George Harrison responde desairado al continuo acoso de Paul McCartney dándole instrucciones y a una omnipresenteYoko Ono, constantemente pegada a John Lennon, cuchicheando en sus oídos y saliendocon él cada vez que abandonaba el estudio.

Yoko Ono , la mala de la película

Yoko Ono debe ser, junto a Gary Moore, uno de los personajes más odiados de la historiadel rock. Basta con escribir su nombre en una web o foro de internet, para invocar a unalegión de trolls y hoygans varios profiriendo insultos contra su persona.

John Lennon conoció a Yoko Ono durante una de sus exposiciones artísticas el 9 deNoviembre de 1966 o incluso tal vez un año antes pero no inició su relación con ella hastaMayo de 1968, a su regreso del viaje a la India organizado por Harrison.

Harrison pretendía iniciar al grupo en la meditación transcendental bajo la tutela del guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Cada miembro se tomó el viaje de forma diferente. Ringo escapó a los 10 días y Lennon duró dos semanas, tras las cuales decidió que quería divorciarse desu mujer Cynthia y comenzar con Yoko. Cynthia en aquel momento estaba de vacacionesen Grecia y al volver, entró en su casa, encontrándose a Yoko con su bata de estar encasa puesta y a Lennon saludándola con un “oh, hola!”.

La idea de Lennon era involucrar a Yoko en la actividad de los Beatles como si fuera un miembro más. Yoko no solo estuvo presente, pegada a Lennon constantemente en lassesiones de grabación del “Let it be”, si no que había empezado a practicar con él una extraña actividad llamada “conciencia elevada”, consistente en que la comunicación entredos personas conectadas a través de verdades ulteriores es innecesaria, por tanto, cuando Yoko hablaba, en todo momento hablaba en nombre de Lennon.

Hasta la fecha, el régimen que seguían los Beatles era que salvo ellos, nadie más opinabasobre que decisiones tomar dentro de sus procesos creativos. Incluso en cierta ocasión, Paul McCartney había abroncado públicamente a Brian Epstein por meterse en temasartísticos.

La primera vez que Yoko abrió la voca para intervenir en una cuestión artística durantelas grabaciones del “Let it be”, Paul exclamó sorprendido; “que me jodan” pero a medidaque las intervenciones se volvieron habituales, amparadas por los silencios de Lennon, yaque ella hablaba supuestamente en su nombre, el resto de los miembros del grupo sesubían por las paredes.

Sorprendentemente, Paul fue el Beatle que se tomó con mejor filosofía el asunto Yoko Ono, según declaró después, solo había dos opciones, aguantarla o arriesgarse a perder a Lennon.

Sin embargo George Harrison se lo tomó mal desde el primer momento. Durante los últimos 8 años prácticamente había aguantado sin tener mucha voz o voto dentro del grupo yahora se encontraba con que una recién llegada pintaba mucho más que él.

Lennon había caído un error clásico, de los que se cometen cuando un grupo rebasa la líneaque hay entre lo profesional y lo amateur, que consiste en dejar a terceros en discordiaentrometerse en las decisiones de la banda; novias, esposas, suegras, cuñados, amigos… A Lennon le parecería estupendo pero para el resto de sus compañeros supone quealguien ajeno se ponga a su misma altura y tome decisiones que afectan directamente asu trabajo, a sus medios de vida y en este caso, como estaba la empresa Apple de pormedio, a sus negocios.

Veinte días antes del concierto en la azotea de Apple, Harrison llegaba a las manos en una discusión con Lennon por este motivo, de la que las cámaras de Lindsey-Hogg llegaban acaptar solo el final, cuando George abandonaba el grupo, saliendo precipitadamente del edificio diciendo “me largo de aquí”.

El último concierto de los Beatles, 30 de Enero de 1969, azotea de losestudios Apple

Otra cosa de la que no quería oir ni hablar George Harrison por aquel entonces era devolver a actuar en directo, mientras que el resto de miembros mostraban cierto entusiasmocon la idea.

Justo antes del “Let it be”, George había pasado algún tiempo con “The Band”, el grupoque acompañaba a Dylan y habían quedado encantado por el espíritu de las “BasementTapes”, música en estado puro, temas grabados en una toma, recogiendo toda la emocióndel momento.

Los Beatles pretendían grabar el “Let it be” de la misma manera, en directo, cada tema en una sola toma sin post producción. Incluso Lennon despreció el trabajo de su ingenerio degrabación, George Martin, diciéndole literalmente que “no querían su mierda de producción”. La pega es que para poder grabar en directo, a la primera en una sola toma, hay que entrar en el estudio después de haber ensayado mucho.

Un ejemplo es el primer disco de los Doors, el grupo había estado tocando en directo surepertorio durante casi un año entero y cuando el sello Elektra los contrató, se limitaron arepetir sus actuaciones dentro del estudio, grabando todo el trabajo y otros tantos temasdesechados en tan solo una semana. Esto mismo es lo que querían hacer los Beatles conel “Let it be”.

Las sesiones del “Let it be” en realidad consistieron en largos ensayos dentro de losestudios de cine Twickenham, donde eran filmados por Lyndsey-Hogg.

Como la banda empezó a sonar muy bien en los ensayos, volviendo al espíritu de susinicios, se planteó la vuelta a los escenarios, cosa a la que al parecer, Harrison se negabaen redondo.

A los dos días después de abandonar la banda, el 12 de Enero los cuatro Beatles se volvíana reunir para hacer “terapia de grupo”, llegando a un acuerdo; no habría más ensayos en losestudios Twickenham, no habría ningún concierto en directo pero el caso Yoko Ono quedaba sin resolver ya que seguiría asistiendo a las sesiones restantes del “Let it be” junto a Lennon. Al terminar la terapia, Lennon dijo que Yoko solo quería que la aceptasen y Ringo le respondería que ella “nunca sería un Beatle”.

Como se habían quedado sin conciertos que grabar para el film, a alguien, hay dudas si fue a Lyndsey-Hogg, Ringo o Paul, se le ocurrió grabar un mini-concierto en la azotea del edificio Apple. Cuando estaban a punto de subir, el 30 de Enero de 1969 por la tarde, todavía tenían dudas sobre si hacerlo o no pero Lennon, que parecía encantado con laidea, les animó y ofrecieron su primera actuación desde 1966, una de las mejores.

En el concierto a los Beatles se les ve completamente pletóricos, con Lennon, McCartney yHarrison cruzando sonrisas de complicidad y disfrutando del momento. Lo último queparecen es una banda al borde de la disolución. Tiempo después, Lennon declarabasentirse decepcionado, porque esparaba que la policía hubiese parado el concierto y leshubiese detenido por escándalo público o algo así, ya que hubiera sido un gran punto yfinal para los Beatles. La policia londinense sacó toda su flema británica y se limitó acontrolar el evento manteniendo las distancias pero de las declaraciones de Lennon, sedesprende que ya por aquel entonces atisbaba o al menos se planteaba en su mente elfinal del grupo.

Sea como fuere, a partir del mini-concierto, la última vez que todos los miembros de losBeatles estuvieron juntos en un estudio fué para grabar “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” delAbbey Road el 20 de Agosto de 1969.

Los negocios de los Beatles, causa más probable

Si los Beatles sobrevieron a las sesiones del “Let it be” y en su concierto final no parecíanestar tan mal avenidos, entonces ¿qué fue lo que motivó su disolución?.

El 28 de Enero de 1969, dos días antes del concierto de la azotea, el abogado Allen Klein, que se dedicaba a la representación de artistas, se acercó a Lennon y Yoko cuandoestaban en su hotel, ofreciéndoles sus servicios para asumir el papel de manager delgrupo, la misma posición que ostentaba Brian Epstein antes de morir. Aquella mismatarde Lennon firmaba un acuerdo con el abogado y al día siguiente informaba tanto alresto del grupo como al sello EMI.

Allen Klein encandiló a Lennon y Yoko pero sin saberlo, aquel mismo día sedesencadenaba una pugna por el control de los Beatles porque McCartney ya tenía enmente a otro candidato para manager, el padre de su novia Linda Eastman, John Eastman. De hecho, había sido propuesto con anterioridad sin llegar a cuajar.

McCartney cometía el mismo error que Lennon con Yoko, al querer meter a un suegro de pormedio. Cabe apuntar que Mick Jagger le había pasado una nota advirtiéndole de no fiarsede Klein, cuyas intenciones eran asegurarse el 20% de los beneficios del grupo, unaexageración si pensamos que se trataba de los Beatles.

Ringo y Harrison se habían reunido con ambos candidatos y optaron por Klein, ya que lesparecía un individuo más cercano a ellos, un tipo de la calle, mientras que Eastman lesparecía un abogado de clase acomodada.

La disputa por el poder dentro de los Beatles paralizó temporalmente el proyecto “Let itbe – Get Back” aunque todos los miembros del grupo se pusieron de acuerdo para grabarun nuevo álbum, el “Abbey Road”, donde darían lo mejor de sí recuperando la esencia delos Beatles originarios, convenciendo al ingeniero George Martin para que regresase.

No obstante, siguieron produciéndose diversos incidentes. El 9 de Mayo, durante unasesión de grabación en los estudios Olympic Sound, Lennon, Harrison y Ringo seplantaban en la puerta junto a Klein exigiendo a Paul la firma del contrato, que ellos yahabían refrendado. Como Paul se negó, le dejaron allí mismo plantado con toda la grabaciónpor delante.

Las grabaciones del “Abbey Road” se completaron y el álbum vió la luz el 26 deSeptiembre de 1969 pero Lennon había actuado con la Plastic Ono Band unos días antes, el13 de Septiembre, en el Toronto’s Rock and Roll Concert, flanqueado por Eric Clapton. Parece ser que como la acogida por parte del público había sido excelente, se habíaplanteado su salida de los Beatles para centrarse en el nuevo grupo.

Una semana después los cuatro Beatles se reunían con Klein presente y mientrasMcCartney intentaba persuadir a los demás para que volvieran a actuar en directo, Lennonse levantó, le dijo que estaba chalado y que rompía el grupo. Tanto McCartney como Kleinintentaron que rectificase aunque solo consiguieron convencerle de post-poner un par demeses el anuncio de la ruptura, con la esperanza de que cambiase de idea. Al subirse alcoche de vuelta al hotel le diría a Yoko que “se acabaron los Beatles, a partir de ahorasolo esas tu”.

Paul McCartney cayó en una depresión, refugiándose en el alcohol hasta que a sugerenciade su mujer Linda, retomó el control de sus asuntos y comenzó a trabajar en su primer álbum en solitario, en las navidades de 1969.

Por su parte, en Enero de 1970, Lennon, Harrison y Klein volvieron a las cintas del “Let itbe” grabadas un año antes. Las grabaciones, crudas, tal y como él mismo las habíaplanteado desde el primer momento, ahora le parecían pésimas y aprovechando queacababa de trabajar con el super productor Phil Spector en el “Instant Karma”, dejó en susmanos toda la post-producción, en la cual a instancias de McCartney, aplicó su muro desonido en toda su gloria.

A McCartney la producción de Spector le sentó como un tiro, solicitando cambios que Kleindenegó alegando falta de tiempo. En Marzo de 1970 llamaba a Lennon para comunicarleque él también abandonaba el grupo.

El último episodio aun estaba por llegar; su primer álbum en solitario estaba previsto serpublicado el 17 de Abril, mientras que Lennon, Harrison y Klein habían planeado lanzar el “Let it be” el 24 del mismo mes. Como ambos lanzamientos se iban a solapar, Lennon, Harrison y Klein enviaron a Ringo como emisario a casa de Paul McCartney, con una cartaen el que se le conminaba a postponer el lanzamiento de su álbum… McCartney, que hasta1970 había mantenido siempre la calma, echó a patadas al pobre Ringo de su casa. El 31 deDiciembre de 1970, Paul McCartney presentaba la demanda de disolución del grupo.

Desde Abril de 1970, entre los Beatles solo quedaron cruces de acusaciones en formatosvarios, algunos muy peculiares. McCartney era el primero en anunciar la disolución delgrupo, incluyendo una nota explicatoría junto a su primer trabajo en solitario. Inmediatamente, en una entrevista para Rolling Stone, Lennon acusaba a McCartney deusar la noticia de la disolución para promocionar su disco.

En 1971, ambos McCartney y Lennon, usaban letras de canciones en sus discos en solitariopara acusarse. Primero fue McCartney en su segundo disco “Ram”, publicado el 17 de Mayode 1971, donde incluía un tema titulado “Too many people” – “ demasiada gente” en clarareferencia a Yoko. Lennon le respondió con el tema “How do you sleep” – “¿Qué talduermes?”, publicado en el “Imagine”, el 9 de Septiembre de 1971.

Rickenbackers de 12 cuerdas

Las primeras guitarras de 12 cuerdas fueron acústicas y su origen nunca ha estado del todo claro. En el continente americano, tanto norteamericanos como latinoamericanos se disputan su invención y lo cierto es que hay evidencias que apoyarían ambas reivindicaciones.
Según la teoría norteamericana, las guitarras de 12 cuerdas aparecen en USA entre finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Estas guitarras serían fabricadas por luthieres italianos que trabajaban en los talleres de Oscar Schmidt, Harmony y Regal en Nueva York y Chicago.

Pyramid strings; las cuerdas de los Beatles

La primera vez que tuve que cambiar las cuerdas a la Gretsch 6119, me fui a la tienda, cogí un juego de la marca más común del 0.010, tire las viejas que estaban ya muy oxidadas, puse las nuevas y todo el buen sonido que tenía esta guitarra se fue al traste.
Tirar las cuerdas viejas fue un error porque ni sabía de que marca eran, ni de que grosor. Si las hubiese conservado al menos podría haber averiguado su grosor midiéndolas con un calibre. Así comencé una larga héjira en busca de las cuerdas adecuadas para la Gretsch. Primero (leer más)

Las guitarras de George Harrison

Sería imposible identificar a George Harrison con una sola guitarra ya que a lo largo de su carrera usó un largo numero de ellas, así que me voy a centrar en este blog en las guitarras principales que uso mientras formó parte de los Beatles.
En la etapa pre-Beatle, que iría hasta 1960, la primera guitarra que tuvo George Harrison fue una guitarra española Egmond fabricada en Holanda y comprada en 1956 a un compañero de clase, Raymond Hughes, por 3 libras. Actualmente esta guitarra está tasada en unos 800.000$ y se expone actualmente en el museo de los (leer más)

Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney is set to play one of his smallest gigs in a decade this Christmas.

The singer will play a lunchtime show on December 17 at the 100 Club on Oxford Street in London.

He last played to such a small audience at the Cavern Club in Liverpool in 1999.

Speaking about the show, he said: "I've played all sorts of different venues over the years and this kind of show presentsa different kind of challenge to performing in a stadium.

"I love performing and I love connecting with audiences, be it in a stadium or arena or in a club. I'm looking forward to being able to interact with fans on a face-to-face basis, not to mention the smell of sweat and beer."

Tickets for the upcoming show, called Packed Lunch, are expected to sell out instantly.

John Lennon fans mark anniversary of singer's murder in New York City

Despite a strong winter wind, the two candles lit by Ayrton "Gary" dos Santos kept on burning as he placed them on the black and white mosaic in Central Park's Strawberry Fields that pays tribute to the memory of John Lennon.

Dos Santos has laid fresh flowers here each day for 17 years and is known as the Mayor of Strawberry Fields. But today's tribute was not a lonely one. On the 30th anniversary of the former Beatle's murder, he was watched by a crowd of onlookers and journalists. "It is a sad day," he said. "It will always be a sad day. I will keep doing this for John until the day I die."

The memorial, which bears the word "Imagine", taken from Lennon's most famous song, was surrounded by a throng of people braving the freezing cold of a blustery but sunny morning.

Most stood and watched Dos Santos. Some laid down photos of Lennon while others placed apples and even a slice of cake.

Rob Wilson, 19, a guitar-wielding New Jersey student, sat and strummed Let It Be. When he switched to Imagine, a few spectators sang along. Wilson said he was skipping classes to play and meditate all day on Lennon.

"John is the Jesus of music," he said. "He came here to save us. He still is."

Strawberry Fields is just 50m from the Dakota apartments where Lennon and Yoko Ono lived. Lennon arrived at the building for the last time in 1980, after a day at a recording studio. He planned to say goodnight to his son Sean, aged five. Instead Mark Chapman was waiting and shot him dead.

The death shocked the world, deifying Lennon as a political symbol of radical politics and ensuring that, unlike the other Beatles, he would never grow old.

Thus he still inspires people today, even those born years after he died.

One such fan is Daniel Garza, 24. The chef had travelled from San Antonio, Texas, just to pay tribute to Lennon.

He said he felt both sad and happy and that Lennon's legacy of music and striving for peace lived on.

"The mourning period is over. Thirty years is plenty of time. Now it is just remembrance. The music will live forever and so will his ideas," said Garza, wearing a Lennon T-shirt.

The mood at Strawberry Fields was a mix of sombreness and happiness.

Many tourists, mingling with mourners and journalists, took photographs. Others stood silently, clasping their hands together or laying flowers and saying brief prayers. One woman knelt on the ground and sang along to Wilson's music. Another man stood quietly holding a sign stating: CIA killed Lennon.

One enterprising street stallholder set up shop nearby, hawking pictures of Lennon and Liverpool FC scarves. That spirit of capitalist enterprise – which Lennon himself is said to have been sceptical about – was evident in much of the media hype in the US this week.

TV channels and publishing houses rushed to produce books and documentaries on Lennon and his death.

They ranged from CNN special programmes to a broadcast of a final radio interview that Lennon and Ono gave just hours before his death. Elsewhere, photography exhibits opened and new books hit the shelves.

Much of the media coverage was hagiographical, but some showed less respect. In a rather unkind column headlined: Imagine there was no shooting – grumpy John Lennon turns 70, Bloomberg culture writer Mark Beech described an alternate reality in which Lennon was still alive and sang at Barack Obama's inauguration. "My guess is that he would be a cranky 70-year-old, a not-so-English eccentric, ridiculed by many, still venerated by fans," Beech wrote.

Other newspapers ran extensive articles asking readers to remember where they had been when they heard Lennon was shot.

But perhaps the most poignant voice to emerge from the flood of coverage on Lennon's death was that of the singer himself.

To mark the anniversary, Rolling Stone released the full text of Lennon's final interview with the magazine. In it, he lambasted the critics of his music and lamented the way fame worked.

"It's like idol worship. They only like people when they're on their way up. I cannot be on the way up again," he said before adding: "What they want is dead heroes, like Sid Vicious and James Dean. I'm not interested in being a dead hero. So forget 'em."

Sadly, the choice over becoming a dead hero was not Lennon's to make.

Prague, June 29 (CTK) - Pete Best, former drummer of The Beatles, signed the John Lennon Wall on Kampa island in Prague's historical centre Tuesday.

Later on Tuesday, Best had a concert with his current band in the Czech Music Museum in Prague that was held within the "Beatlemania" exhibition.

He said he came to Prague to add his signature on the Lennon Wall and to support the link between Prague and Liverpool because many Czechs visit Britain but do not go to Liverpool.

After John Lennon was murdered in 1980, people started writing love and peace slogans and making pictures on a wall in Prague centre dedicated to him. Czech communist police damaged the inscriptions and pictures regularly in the 1980s, however, Lennon's fans always renewed them again.

Best recalled the days when he played with the legendary band. He said The Beatles had undergone the crucial change during a four-month stay in Hamburg, Germany, where they played six to seven hours almost every day.

Best said he was not angry at the other players anymore for making him leave the band but that his relations with the rest of the Beatles ended due to his departure.

He said he was in no contact with Paul McCartney and that he last talked to Ringo Starr in 1962.

Ringo Starr replaced Best behind the drums in 1962.

Pete Best, now 68, played with the Beatles in 1960-1962. He was the most popular member of the band among the fans, especially the girls. As the real reason of his departure is not known, there are many theories why he was made to leave the band.

La moneda conmemorativa, con un valor nominal de 5 libras esterlinas (8 dólares), salió a la venta el viernes.

Los coleccionistas tendrán que pagar 44.99 libras esterlinas por cada una de las monedas de edición limitada.

Lennon se une a William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale y otras luminarias británicas cuyas imágenes han agraciado monedas especiales.

Volumes have been written about John, Paul, George and Ringo, the four lads from Liverpool who changed youth culture overnight-and just as significantly inspired the rest of the world to embrace new ideas as their own.

With the Beatles, it wasn’t just about the music-although their genius manifested itself in a seismic shift-but also their irreverent outlook, decidedly cool sense of fashion, camera-ready image and irrepressible optimism. The Fab Four played a perfectly timed part in lifting society from the cookie-cutter monotony of the 1950s toward the unbounded idealism and unrepressed attitudes embraced by a generation coming of age in the 1960s.

At the front lines of the mid-’60s British invasion, the Beatles attracted 73 million viewers to The Ed Sullivan Show during their debut performance-45 percent of the U.S. adult population at the time. (During that appearance, CBS superimposed a caveat to young, impressionable fans over John Lennon’s visage: “Sorry, girls-he’s married.”) A week later, they appeared again with Sullivan, this time live via satellite from their Miami Beach hotel.

Suddenly, it was obvious that Beatlemania had stormed our shores. The Beatles had taken the world from shades of gray into a new Technicolor reality. Suddenly, long hair, imagination and individuality were in. Blandness, conformity and closed minds were out.

Para el día de su aniversario se planeó un concierto benéfico, charlas a cargo de quienes conocieron al músico y una fiesta de cumpleaños en el emblemático Cavern Club. Muchos fueron los famosos invitados a esta celebración que unió a todo un pueblo en Liverpool.

Lennon fue reconocido por sus éxitos con The Beatles y como solista. Él nació un 9 de octubre de 1940 y falleció el 8 de diciembre de 1980 a manos de Mark David Chapman, quien lo asesinó al frente de la puerta de su casa.

If John Lennon had only been one of the four members of the Beatles, his artistic immortality would already have been assured. The so-called “smart Beatle,” he brought a penetrating intelligence and a stinging wit both to the band’s music and its self-presentation. But in such songs as “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown),” “Rain” and “In My Life,” he also marshaled gorgeous melodies to evoke a sophisticated, dreamlike world-weariness well beyond his years. Such work suggested not merely a profound musical and literary sensibility - a genius, in short -- but a vision of life that was simultaneously reflective, utopian and poignantly realistic.

While in the Beatles, Lennon displayed an outspokenness that immersed the band in controversy and helped redefine the rules of acceptable behavior for rock stars. He famously remarked in 1965 that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus” - a statement that was more an observation than a boast, but that resulted in the band’s records being burned and removed from radio station playlists in the U.S. He criticized America’s involvement in Vietnam, and, as the Sixties progressed, he became an increasingly important symbol of the burgeoning counterculture.

But it was only after the breakup of the Beatles in 1970 that the figure the world now recognizes as “John Lennon” truly came into being. Whether he was engaging in social activism; giving long, passionate interviews that, once again, broadened the nature of public discourse for artists; defining a new life as a self-described “househusband;” or writing and recording songs, Lennon came to view his life as a work of art in which every act shimmered with potential meaning for the world at large. It was a Messianic attitude, to be sure, but one that was tempered by an innate inclusiveness and generosity. If he saw himself as larger than life, he also yearned for a world in which his ego managed at once to absorb everyone else and dissolve all differences among people, leaving a Zen-like tranquility and calm. “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one,” he sang in “Imagine,” which has become his best-known song and an international anthem of peace. “I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one.”

Such imagery, coupled with the tragedy of his murder in 1980, has often led to Lennon’s being sentimentalized as a gentle prince of peace gazing off into the distance at an Eden only he could see. In fact, he was a far more complex and difficult person, which, in part, accounts for the world’s endless fascination with him. Plastic Ono Band (1970), the first solo album he made after leaving the Beatles, alternates songs that are so emotionally raw that to this day they are difficult to listen to with songs of extraordinary beauty and simplicity. Gripped by his immersion in primal-scream therapy, which encouraged its practitioners to re-experience their most profound psychic injuries, Lennon sought in such songs as “Mother” and “God” to confront and strip away the traumas that had afflicted his life since childhood.

And those traumas were considerable. Lennon’s mother, Julia, drifted in and out of his life during his childhood in Liverpool - he was raised by Julia’s sister Mimi and Mimi’s husband, George - and then died in a car accident when Lennon was seventeen. His father was similarly absent, essentially walking out on the family when John was an infant. He disappeared for good when Lennon was five, only to return after his son had become famous as a member of the Beatles. Consequently, Lennon struggled with fears of abandonment his entire life. When he repeatedly cries, “Mama, don’t go/Daddy come home,” in “Mother,” it’s less a performance than a scarifying brand of therapeutic performance art. And in that regard, as well as many others, it revealed the influence of Yoko Ono, whom Lennon had married in 1969, leaving his first wife, Cynthia, and their son Julian in order to do so.

The minimalist sound of Plastic Ono Band was significant too. Lennon had come to associate the elaborate musical arrangements of much of the Beatles’ later work with Paul McCartney and George Martin, and he consciously set out to purge those elements from his own work. Co-producing with Ono and the legendary Phil Spector, he built a sonic environment that could not have been more basic - guitar, bass, drums, the occasional piano -- whatever was essential and absolutely nothing more. Lyrically, he turned away from the psychedelic flights and Joycean wordplay of such songs as “I Am the Walrus” and “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” - as well as his books, In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works -- and toward a style in which unadorned, elemental speech gathered poetic force through its very directness.

On his next album, Imagine (1971), Lennon felt confident enough to reintroduce some melodic elements reminiscent of the Beatles into his songs. Working again with Ono and Spector, he retains the eloquent plainspokenness of Plastic Ono Band, but allows textural elements such as strings, to create more of a sense of beauty. The album’s title track alone ensured its historical importance; it is a call to idealism that has provided solace and inspiration at every moment of social and humanitarian crisis since it was written.

From there Lennon turned to a style that was a sort of journalistic agit-prop. Sometime In New York City (1972) is as outward-looking and blunt as Imagine was, for the most part, soft-focused and otherworldly. As its title suggests, the album reflects Lennon’s immersion in the drama and noise of the city to which he had moved with Yoko Ono. And as its cover art suggests, the album is something like a newspaper - a report from the radical frontlines on the political upheavals of the day. His activism would create enormous problems for Lennon, however. The Nixon administration, paranoid about the possibility that a former Beatle might become a potent leader and recruiting tool of the anti-war movement, attempted to have Lennon deported. Years of legal battles ensued before Lennon finally was awarded his green card in 1976.

Lennon’s political struggles unfortunately found their match in his personal life. He and Ono split up in the fall of 1973, shortly before the release of his album, Mind Games. He moved to Los Angeles and later described the eighteen months he spent separated from Ono as his “lost weekend,” a period of wild indulgence and artistic drift. Like Mind Games, the albums he made during this period, Walls and Bridges (1974) and Rock N Roll (1975), are the expressions of a major artist seeking, with mixed results, to recover his voice. None of them lack charm, and their high points include the lovely title track of Mind Games; Walls and Bridges’ “Whatever Gets You Through the Night,” a rollicking duet with Elton John that gave Lennon his first number-one single as a solo artist; and the sweet nostalgia of Rock N Roll, a covers album that was Lennon’s tribute to the musical pioneers of his youth. But none of those albums rank among his greatest work.

In 1975, Lennon reunited with Ono, and their son Sean was born later that year. For the next five years, Lennon withdrew from public life, and his family became his focus. Then, in 1980, he and Ono returned to the studio to work on Double Fantasy, a hymn to their life together with Sean. The couple was plotting a full-fledged comeback - doing major interviews to support the album’s release, recording new songs for a follow-up, planning a tour. Then, shockingly, Lennon was shot to death outside the apartment building where he and Ono lived on the night of December 8, 1980.

Lennon’s death broke hearts around the world. In the U.S., it recalled nothing so much as the assassination of John Kennedy in 1963, an event for which, ironically, the arrival of the Beatles a few months later had provided a welcome tonic. In the twenty-five years since, Lennon’s influence and symbolic importance have only grown. His music, of course, will live forever. But he has survived primarily as a restless voice of change and independent thought. He is an enemy of the status quo, a bundle of contradictions who insisted on a world in which all the various elements of his personality could find free, untrammeled expression. Innumerable times since his death Lennon has been sorely missed. And just as many times and more he has been present - evoked by all of us who find ourselves and each other in the music he made and the vision that he articulated and tried to make real.

Hoy se celebra el aniversario del natalicio del cantautor John Lennon, una leyenda que alcanzó fama con el grupo inglés, The Beatles. Posterior al gran éxito de la banda y luego de una difícil separación, Lennon logró brillar con luz propia.

"Working Class Hero", "Woman", "Imagine" y "Whatever gets you through the night", por mencionar algunos, son éxitos que el artista ha logrado colocar en la mente de sus seguidores a través del tiempo.

Como parte de los festejos, en Estados Unidos se estrenó la película "NoWhere Boy", donde se revela el lado sensible e inseguro que caracterizaba a Lennon en su adolescencia.

El actor Aaron Jonhson, quien encarna al cantante, comentó que interpretar a un astro del rock fue uno de sus más grandes retos en su carrera.

Por su parte, Liverpool apuesta por mostrar lo que sólo esta ciudad conoce: los orígenes de uno de los más grandes músicos pop del siglo XX.

Las celebraciones comienzan hoy en el emblemático Cavern Club con una fiesta de cumpleaños.

Legado musical

MADRID.- Trece grabaciones caseras inéditas de John Lennon, algunas versiones en vivo y ensayos escritos por su viuda, Yoko Ono, y sus hijos, Julian y Sean, serán incluidos en la antología Gimme some truth, que saldrá a la venta el próximo 4 de octubre para conmemorar el 70 aniversario del nacimiento del beatle.

El sello discográfico EMI informó hoy en su página web de los detalles de la reedición de las grabaciones que John Lennon realizó en solitario tras la separación de los Beatles en 1970.

El proyecto incluye la publicación de The John Lennon signature box, una edición especial de 11 discos entre los que se encuentran las remasterizaciones de los álbumes John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970), Imagine (1971), Some time in New York city (1972), Mind games (1973), Walls and bridges (1974), Rock 'n' roll (1975), Double fantasy (1980) y Milk and honey (1984).

Who was the foremost member of the foremost group of all time? Was Paul McCartney or John Lennon the real driving force behind the Beatles? That question has ignited debates for decades. Rolling Stone's new special issue, The Beatles' 100 Greatest Songs, doesn't answer the question (nothing ever will), but it sheds some light on it.

Of the 100 songs, which were ranked by the editors of Rolling Stone, 40 were written by Lennon, 35 by McCartney, 17 by the two men working together and eight by George Harrison, who came into his own as a songwriter on the Beatles' final albums.

So it's fairly close, but Lennon was the key Beatle? Not so fast. In the high-rent district, McCartney leads. McCartney has three songs in the top 10 ("Yesterday" at #4, "Hey Jude" at #7 and "Let It Be" at #8), to just two for Lennon ("Strawberry Fields Forever" at #3 and "Come Together" at #9). Three songs in the top 10 are Lennon/McCartney collaborations: "A Day In The Life" at #1, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" at #2 and "In My Life" at #5. Harrison wrote the two remaining songs in the top 10 ("Something" at #6 and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at #10).

And Lennon's five-song lead over McCartney would have evaporated if the voters had found room on the list for these famous McCartney songs: "The Fool On The Hill," "Magical Mystery Tour," "Michelle," "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." Here are a few more notable McCartney songs they left off: "Birthday," "Fixing A Hole," and "I'm Looking Through You."

By contrast, the only Lennon songs that really surprised me by their omission were "This Boy" and "Good Night." Other Lennon songs that they left off include "I Should Have Known Better," "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" and "I'll Cry Instead."

Here's another indication that the voters favored Lennon. In three cases, they flipped a Beatles single over and ranked a B side written by Lennon over an A side written by McCartney. The voters ranked "Strawberry Fields Forever" (#3) over "Penny Lane" (#32); "If I Fell" (#26) over "And I Love Her" (#65); and "I Am The Walrus" (#33) over "Hello Goodbye" (#100). The voters also placed Lennon's "Please Please Me" (#20) ahead of its A side, the Lennon/McCartney collabo "From Me To You" (#72).

Why do critics tend to favor Lennon? There are two main reasons. Lennon was edgier and more envelope-pushing, and rock critics tend to favor those qualities over McCartney's more tradition-bound, pop-minded virtues. Also, Lennon died at 40, shot to death outside of his apartment. McCartney is 68. He has lived to receive all the awards and honors a man could ever want. To cite just one example, both Lennon and McCartney were voted Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Recording Academy, but only McCartney lived to receive it.

It's just human nature that critics will tend to favor the one whose life was cut short so senselessly.

I imagine that McCartney occasionally chafes when critics habitually favor Lennon, but I assume he understands the reasons for it.

And while part of me would have liked to see a tie between Lennon and McCartney for most songs on the list (reflecting their equal contributions to the Beatles legacy), it would have looked a little suspect; as if the panelists had contrived to get that result.

The special issue strives for parity between the two songwriters. It features a list of five of Lennon's favorite Beatles songs, including two that were written by McCartney, "Hey Jude" and "Why Don't We Do It In The Road."

It also features a list of six of McCartney's favorite Beatles songs, including two that were written by Lennon, "Nowhere Man" and "I Am The Walrus."

An editor's note in the issue explains, "Lennon and McCartney, by mutual agreement, let all of their songs be co-credited ‘Lennon/McCartney' on their records. We have named the ‘main writer' wherever possible."

There is some subjectivity in assigning credit for songs. There were songs, especially early on, that were true collaborations. And there were songs that one man or the other wrote entirely alone. But there were a lot of songs where one man took the lead in writing the song, but the other added a little something that made all the difference. That, of course, was the magic of the Beatles.

As you read the essays about each song, the main thing you come away with is the sense that it was the combination of the two men-each with his own distinctive strengths, perfectly complementing the other-that made the Beatles the greatest group of all time.

The Beatles had 20 #1 hits on Billboard magazine's Hot 100, which is, to this day, the record for any artist in the rock era. All 20 of these songs made the list. The three that rank the highest are "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (#2), "Yesterday" (#4) and "Hey Jude" (#7). The three that rank the lowest are "Love Me Do" (#87), "The Long And Winding Road" (#90) and "Hello Goodbye" (#100).

Of the Beatles' 34 hits that made the top 10 on the Hot 100, all but five made the list. The group's cover version of the Isley Brothers' hit "Twist And Shout" wasn't eligible because the Beatles didn't write it. The group's four top 10 hits that were eligible but didn't make the list are "Do You Want To Know A Secret?," "P.S. I Love You," "She's A Woman" and "Free As A Bird," the group's 1996 "reunion" hit.

The voters also found room for 58 album tracks that were never released as singles. Several factors explain this: the richness of the Beatles catalog; the fact that in the Beatles' heyday, often only one or two (or even no!) songs were released as singles from each album; and the tendency of critics to like to show off a little by putting more obscure songs ahead of the expected, obvious choices.

Here are the five non-singles that ranked the highest on the list: "A Day In The Life" (#1), "In My Life" (#5), "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (#10), "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" (#12) and "Tomorrow Never Knows" (#18).

The Beatles' strongest double-sided hit, in the estimation of these voters, was "Come Together"/"Something." Both sides of the 1969 smash made the top 10 on the Rolling Stone list.

The list includes four of the five Beatles songs that received Grammy nominations for Song of the Year, but it omits the only Beatles song ever to win that award: "Michelle," which was voted Song of the Year for 1966. (The ballad won because it had strong adult contemporary appeal. The Grammys were still coming to terms with rock at the time.)

The issue documents Harrison's emergence as a songwriter. After being overshadowed by Lennon/McCartney through most of the Beatles' run, Harrison came into his own as a writer with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," from 1968's The Beatles (which is better known as The White Album). His 1969 ballad "Something" became one of the Beatles' most covered songs ever, topped only by McCartney's "Yesterday."

Frank Sinatra recorded "Something" in 1972. As the issue points out, Sinatra often sang the song in concert, introducing it as one of the best love songs ever written. Yet, in doing so, Sinatra often mistakenly credited it to Lennon/McCartney. That's an indication of how strong the Lennon/McCartney "brand" was. (I hope Harrison had a sense of humor about that.)

Two musicians contributed pieces to the issue. Elvis Costello, who collaborated with McCartney on a dozen songs in the late ‘80s, wrote the introduction. Max Weinberg, the drummer for Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, wrote a piece about Ringo Starr's greatest drumming performances.

The back page is devoted to statistics. The album with the most songs on the list is The Beatles, with 13. (Of course, as a double album, it had an advantage.) Runners-up are Revolver, with 11 songs on the list; and A Hard Day's Night and Rubber Soul, with eight each.

The issue demonstrates that the Beatles sustained their creativity throughout their short career. The list includes at least a dozen songs from each of their six prime years, 1964 through 1969. The years with the greatest representation are 1965 and 1966, with 17 songs from each year.

The John vs. Paul debate will, no doubt, continue. The debate over which was the greatest group of all time is just about closed.

No doubt you've been hankering to own a piece of art created by Ringo Starr on his computer. Here's your chance.

Thirty of the Beatle's pieces (signed, of course) will be on exhibit later this month at the Cavern Club at the Hard Rock Cafe in Faneuil Hall, and all of them will be available for sale.

Most will be priced $400 to $800, and all of the proceeds will go to the Lotus Foundation, which supports a range of efforts such as cerebral palsy, homelessness, substance abuse, and animal protection. Starr's artwork will be on display from 11 a.m. to midnight on June 28 and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 29. The exhibit is sponsored by WZLX-FM (100.7). Starr will be in town to perform with his All-Starr Band at the Bank of American Pavilion on June 29.

No word on whether you might be able to run into him at his exhibit, but we're told members of his band will definitely be there. Here are a few examples of his work:

The White House is throwing another epic bash, this time honoring Paul McCartney, winner of this year's Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

Macca is the third songwriter bestowed with the award, (Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon have been honored in previous years), and the Beatle will be feted in the East Room on June 2.

He won't be the only star in the room. An array of performers will perform McCartney's songs in tribute, including Wonder, Faith Hill, the Jonas Brothers, Dave Grohl, Jack White, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock and Corinne Bailey Rae. Funnyman Jerry Seinfeld will also be on hand for a few remarks.

The program will be taped by WETA as part of the “In Performance at the White House” series and is scheduled to air on PBS stations nationwide Wednesday, July 28.

Ringo Starr, the Beatles’ drummer, has admitted he has “found God” after taking what he described as a winding life of enlightenment.

The reformed rock legend, who turns 70 in July, admitted he had lost his way when he was younger, first as a Beatle then later after the group broke up.

He experimented with LSD and marijuana when he was a Beatle in the 1960s, then later in the 1970s suffered alcohol and cocaine problems.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Starr, who is now a teetotal and has quit his 60-a-day cigarette habit, said that religion was one of the most important aspects in his life.

"I feel the older I get, the more I’m learning to handle life. Being on this quest for a long time, it's all about finding yourself," Starr told the paper at a Grammy Museum event in Los Angeles.

"For me, God is in my life. I don't hide from that ... I think the search has been on since the '60s.

“I stepped off the path there for many years and found my way [back] onto it, thank God.”

Starr, who is a vegetarian, is married to former Bond girl Barbara Bach and now splits his time between homes in Los Angeles, London and Monaco.

In the interview he said it was far easier approaching 70.

"Forty was: 'Oh, God, 40!',” he said.

"There's that damn song, 'Life Begins at 40.' No, it's not so big anymore.

“I am nearly 70, and I'd love to be nearly 40, but that's never going to happen.”

Forty years after John Lennon said the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus," the Catholic Church has officially forgiven the group for its sins. Last week, L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican's official newspaper, their music "beautiful" and referred to the band as "a precious jewel."

"It's true they took drugs, lived life to excess because of their success, even said they were bigger than Jesus and put out mysterious messages that were possibly even Satanic," L'Osservatore Romano wrote, in a message approved by the pope. But "what would pop music have been like without the Beatles?" the paper asked in a front-page story.

It's been a long and winding road to forgiveness. In 1966, John Lennon infuriated many Catholics when he said Christianity was dying. "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink," he said. "I needn't argue about that; I'm right and I'll be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first, rock 'n' roll or Christianity."

Now, it seems, the Beatles have been forgiven for their trespasses. But some say it's an odd time for the church to pardon a pop group.

In the midst of a priest abuse scandal that's tainted the highest ranks of the church, the Vatican's front-page Beatles story seems oddly out of place. Some say it's the Vatican that's looking for absolution.

"They surely have bigger things to think about," The Guardian Monday, noting that last week's L'Osservatore Romano also included a story that defended the pope's handling of the scandal.

"Mainstream media coverage of child abuse in the Church has sparked responses worldwide, with many declaring their support for the Holy Father's leadership concerning these cases," the paper said.

AYER HIZO cuarenta años, el 10 de abril de 1970, Paul McCartney hizo oficial la separación de los Beatles en un comunicado en el que anunciaba que los cuatro miembros del grupo más grande de la historia no volverían a tocar juntos. Como dijo John Lennon poco después, el sueño había terminado.

En realidad, el grupo había dejado de funcionar varios meses antes, cuando concluyó la grabación del álbum "Abbey Road". Los cuatro beatles estaban ocupados en proyectos personales, pero nadie se atrevía a anunciar al mundo la separación.

"No dejé a The Beatles. The Beatles dejaron a The Beatles, pero nadie quiere ser el que dice que la fiesta terminó", defiende McCartney en la autobiografía del grupo, "Anthology", que fue publicada en español por Ediciones B en 2000.

En abril de 1970, Paul se disponía a publicar su primer álbum en solitario, "McCartney", y quería evitar entrevistas en las que, sin duda, se le preguntaría por la situación de los Beatles.

Así que decidió que Derek Taylor, responsable de la oficina de prensa del grupo, preparara un cuestionario que McCartney respondió y distribuyó junto a su disco.

"Una de las preguntas fue: '¿Puede decirse que The Beatles se han separado?' Respondí: 'Sí. No volveremos a tocar juntos'", recuerda el bajista, cuyo anuncio se produjo en medio del fuego cruzado que mantenía con sus compañeros por aquellos días.

McCartney estaba furioso con el trabajo realizado por Phil Spector con las cintas que el grupo dejó aparcadas el año anterior y que se publicarían en el álbum "Let it be", a las que el productor había aplicado su famoso "muro de sonido", con arreglos orquestales incluso coros femeninos en la composición de Paul "The long and winding road".

La labor de Spector fue respaldada por John Lennon y George Harrison, quienes se oponían a que Paul publicara su álbum en Apple -el sello creado por el grupo- antes de que salieran a la venta "Let it be" y el disco de debut de Ringo Starr.

Paul sostiene que el grupo llegó a su fin "cuando John dijo: 'Lo dejo'". Lennon actuaba ya junto a Yoko Ono con su propio grupo, la Plastic Ono Band, con el que había publicado un álbum en directo, y en enero de 1970 había grabado el tema "Instant Karma", con Harrison y Spector.

Ringo afirma que, antes del anuncio de Paul, siempre existía la posibilidad de que los Beatles siguieran juntos. "Cuando estábamos en el estudio grabando 'Abbey Road' no dijimos: 'Vale, se ha acabado: último disco, última canción, última toma'", asegura el batería.

Pero la separación de los Beatles era inevitable. Como explica George Martin, el productor que trabajó con ellos en el estudio de grabación durante ocho años, "la ruptura ocurrió por muchos motivos, sobre todo porque cada uno de los chicos quería vivir su propia vida y nunca había podido hacerlo".

"Creo que nos separamos por el mismo motivo por el que se separan las personas. Necesitábamos más espacio vital y The Beatles se habían convertido en un espacio reducido", opina Harrison en la autobiografía del grupo.

Los cuatro beatles emprendieron caminos por separado, pero nunca dejaron de preguntarles por el posible regreso del grupo, una opción que quedó truncada cuando John Lennon fue asesinado en Nueva York el 8 de diciembre de 1980.

El propio Lennon trató de quitar hierro en su momento a la disolución del grupo. "La gente sigue hablando de la separación como si fuera el fin del mundo. Andrew Lloyd Webber has vowed to buy the Abbey Road studios at any cost to preserve its status as the home of British music.

The composer, who has an estimated fortune of £750million, wants to step in and take ownership of the studios in St John's Wood, North-West London, after troubled record group EMI put the building up for sale.

The showbusiness world has launched a full-scale bid to prevent the site being sold to property developers and being bulldozed.

The studios are steeped in history, with the Beatles recording their greatest hits there and featuring the zebra crossing outside on the cover of their Abbey Road album.

Sir Paul McCartney is 'desperate' for the building to remain a working recording studio. The National Trust has also said it is interested in buying it.

EMI is believed to have turned down an offer of just over £30million and yesterday a source close to Lord Lloyd-Webber said: 'Andrew knows that any offer will have to be north of £30million.

'He wants to buy Abbey Road because it is very dear to his heart. When he records there, he uses an orchestra with up to 90 musicians, and there aren't many places you can do that.'

A spokesman for the composer told the Mail: 'Andrew first recorded there in 1967 with Tim Rice and has since recorded most of his musicals there, from Jesus Christ Superstar to his new musical Love Never Dies.

'He thinks it is vital that the studios are saved for the future of the music industry in the UK. Abbey Road has such great facilities, with three major recording studios.'

The informal leader of the 'Save Abbey Road' campaign is DJ Chris Evans, who believes the studios should be sold to the National Trust, which already owns both Sir Paul's and John Lennon's childhood homes in Liverpool.

However, McCartney wants the building to continue as a recording studio.

A source close to the former Beatle said: 'Sir Paul is desperate to keep Abbey Road open as a working studio.

'Of course, if that could be married with the National Trust's ownership that would be a good scenario.'

The source ruled out Sir Paul, who lives in St John's Wood, rescuing the property himself, saying he was 'not in the business of buying recording studios'.

Dame Fiona Reynolds, director general of the National Trust, said the charity would be interested in buying the property.

She said: 'We were absolutely bowled over by Chris Evans, Sir Paul McCartney and other people saying the studios really needed to be saved, and could we help.

'The answer is only if people really want us to and only if they help us. So I really want to know what people think.'

She revealed there had already been interest from the U.S. to help the National Trust purchase the site and said she expected support from Japan as well.

She urged pop legends who have recorded at the studios to help the National Trust secure the building for the nation.

She said: 'Not just The Beatles, but Cliff Richard, Pink Floyd, Radiohead and Oasis.

'Maybe they can help us because they are the kind of people who have huge affection for this place.'

Evans is planning to play only records that have been recorded at Abbey Road on his Radio 2 show this morning.

He said: 'All records lead to Abbey Road. We will have a big pre-weekend push in our innocent but sincere efforts to heighten awareness of the importance of saving Abbey Road as a musical landmark.

'The National Trust wants it to happen - and has the power to move mountains - but only if there is public support. So come on, gang, today is the day.'

Problemas financieros llevan a ejecutivos de Abbey Road Studios a tomar la medida extrema.

La compañía EMI Group Ltd., aquejada por falta de dinero, busca un comprador para los estudios Abbey Road, dijo el martes una persona familiarizada con la situación.

La fuente dijo que las conversaciones llevaban varios meses, pero que aún no se ha encontrado un comprador. Habló a condición de anonimato por ser privadas las negociaciones.

Un vocero de EMI se negó a comentar sobre el intento de venta, que podría representar decenas de millones de dólares para el sello.

EMI, cuyos artistas incluyen a Coldplay, Lily Allen y Robbie Williams, ha tenido problemas financieros desde que la firma de capital privado Terra Firma Capital Partners la adquirió en el 2007 por 2.400 millones de libras esterlinas.

February 9 - Ringo Starr, former Beatle and legendary drummer, received the 2,401st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. The ceremony commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Walk of Fame with a special nighttime dedication which took place in front of the Capitol Records building, a building which Starr quipped, "[The Beatles] helped pay for."

The ceremony organized by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce began with members of the Los Angeles Unified School Districts' Marching Band performing a 21-drum salute in Starr's honor. Other celebrities attending the ceremony included David Lynch, Jeff Lynne and Eric Idle.

The three guests who spoke on Ringo's behalf represented different periods in Ringo's solo career. Musician Joe Walsh, who also happens to be Starr's brother-in-law, first worked with Ringo on the 1980s album,Old Wave. He called Ringo "the most kind and helpful friend you could ever want." Walsh was also part of Ringo's first All-Starr Band back in 1989. This year Ringo will tour with his 11th All Starr band.

Producer Don Was, who first worked with Ringo on his 1992 album Time Takes Time, called Ringo "one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock and roll." He described Ringo's innovative style of "musical drumming" stating "Ringo's musicality, his groove and his spirit are absolutely essential components of all those great Beatle records...what I hear in his drumming is humility... respect for the song, respect for the singer...compassion for what the other musicians are doing."

Singer/songwriter Ben Harper began his praise for Ringo by saying, "Ringo Starr is simply another way of saying peace and love." Harper and his band Relentless7 have been the support band for Ringo in his recent live appearances to promote hist latest album Y NOT.

An awestruck Harper gushed that there were "no words enough to define the global cultural and spiritual effect and influence Ringo Starr has had on the entire planet." Harper became friends with Ringo after they both appeared at David Lynch's Transcendental Meditation benefit concert last year.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presented Ringo with an official proclamation from the city and host Leron Gubler, President and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proclaimed it was Ringo Starr Day.

Finally when Ringo took the stage, he described how touched he was to hear all the compliments given by the three musicians: "It's hard to stand up here and to have guys like that saying what they said -- I want a record of that. I want to put it on CD and never take it down... These three guys who spoke tonight are at the top of my list."

Ringo went on to thank his wife, Barbara Bach, of 30 years, who he says he fell in love with instantly when he saw her at LAX airport in 1980. Then Ringo talked about his former bandmates:

"The Beatles in my book was the best band in the world. I have three brothers. They looked out for me, I looked out for them, and we all supported each other. It was really beautiful to be part of that and besides that, we made some great records!

"They're still my closest friends, they're nominated here in front of me - John and George. I love them both. Peace and love! And let's not forget the guy who's in England - Paul. Peace and love!"

Ringo's star is placed right next to those of John Lennon, who received his star posthumously in 1988, and George Harrison in 2009. The Beatles star was dedicated in 1998 and placed in a special location at the corner of Hollywood Blvd and La Brea next to Elvis Presley's star. Paul McCartney has been approved to receive a star but has not yet scheduled the date for his ceremony.

"I'm thrilled to be getting this star," Ringo continued. "This is the start of the next 50 years of stars and I'm proud to be the first one. It's also cool to get it at night. I don't know about you, but where I live the stars come out at night."

Ringo ended his speech with his favorite motto: "Peace and Love!"

Ben Harper summed it up best: "Today, the Hollywood Walk of Fame is receiving a star by which all other stars are measured -- Ringo Starr."

Sir Paul McCartney ha revelado que choca con la directora de una película acerca de la infancia de John Lennon, porque planea retratrar a la tía Mimi como cruel.

Como resultado, Sam Taylor-Wood aceptó cambiar el libreto de "Nowhere boy" para poner a la famosa tía del líder de los Beatles en una mejor luz.

La película examina la vida del desaparecido Lennon y su relación con con Mimi, que crió al futuro Beatle hasta la edad de cinco años. En su papel aparece actuada por la actriz Kristin Scott Thomas.

Con un "Buenas noches París, mi cielito" en francés, antiguos éxitos como "Let it be" o "Hey Jude" y una nueva canción, el ex Beatle Paul McCartney entusiasmó el jueves por la noche a los 18.000 asistentes a su concierto en París, única etapa francesa de su gira europea.

En la sala de Paris-Bercy, el británico McCartney presentó su "Good Evening New York City", en esta ocasión convertido en "Good Evening Paris", su espectáculo europeo que empezó el 2 de diciembre en la ciudad alemana de Hamburgo y que terminará el 22 de diciembre en Londres.

Durante dos horas y 40 minutos sin interrupción, McCartney deleitó a su público acompañado en el escenario sólo por cuatro músicos -dos guitarras, un teclado y un batería-, tocando él mismo el bajo, el piano y el ukelele.

El público le perdonó rápidamente su hora de retraso para un concierto que inició con un "Buenas noche París, buenas noches mi cielito" y en el que mezcló antiguos éxitos de su época en los Beatles con creaciones recientes suyas.

McCartney rindió homenaje a sus antiguos camaradas John Lennon, asesinado en Nueva York en 1980, interpretando "Here Today", y George Harrison, víctima de un cáncer de pulmón en 2001 con "Something".

También interpretó la canción que acaba de componer para la próxima película de Robert de Niro (Everybody's Fine), que se estrenará en Francia en 2010.

¿Dónde estamos hoy? ¿Ha pasado otro año? ¿ Para dónde se fue el anterior? ¿Un día en la vida, un año más sin John?

Salto de la cama y me pongo la camisa con la foto de mi ídolo, de mi mártir, del único, del irremplazable, uso la camisa y le pregunto John, ¿estás allí? ¿No fuera posible que me respondieras, que me dijeras que no te fuiste, que estás allí en alma y en foto?

Año, tras año, el ritual se repita, diez, veinte,. veintinueve y todo igual y el dolor nunca disminuye, al contrario aumenta más y más.

¿Dónde estás? Te he buscado en Strawberry Field, le he preguntado a Lucy en el Cielo con Diamantes, y y al Hombre sin paradero...todos coinciden en que te marchaste Un día en la Vida y ahora eres Libre como un Pájaro...

Y sin embargo a mí nada ni nadie me conforta, tengo tus discos y tu voz pero no tengo tu garganta, tengo tus videos pero no tengo tu risa ni tu hablar ni tu picardía ni tu palabra enorme...

1957 - Esta inédita foto con el grupo en la cama de un camión la tomó el papá de Rod Davies el 6 de julio de 1957, día en el que John y Paul fueron presentados. Rod Davies la descubrió en enero de este año en un rollo de 35 mm, así es que estuvo escondida por 52 años. Aparecen de izquierda a derecha: Pete Shotton, Eric Griffiths, Len Garry (de espaldas a la cámara), John Lennon (camisa a cuadros, cantando), Colin Hanton y Rod Davies de pie. Un par de horas después de tomada esta foto en la iglesia St Peter, John y Paul fueron presentados por un amigo mutuo, Icvan Voughn.

A su regreso de un viaje a París, Rod encontró a Paul en su remplazo. A peswar de todo, Rod dice que el no haber sido un Beatle no es algo que le quite el sueño
